Another pyro (install) question

Ok, out of the 4 gauges I will be installing, the pyro is the one I am looking forward to the least. The installation notes I received from Geno's with my gauges state that you do not need to disconnect the turbo from the manifold because any metal shavings will just blow thru the turbo blades at startup.

They do say to remove as many as you can with a magnet, but what do you all think about drilling and tapping without disconnecting the turbo?

Thanks

Re:Another pyro (install) question

I disconnected mine, placed a piece of cardboard between manifold and turbo. When I saw the metal chips it caught, I was glad I did. Some of the other guys have posted on other threads on this subject that they have the E-Brake, and turning that on at idle while drilling and tapping the hole creates enough back pressure to blow the shaivings out the hole you are drilling and tapping. If you do it that way, be sure to wear a godd pair of welders gloves and eye protection when doing it. HTH.

Re:Another pyro (install) question

I popped the four nuts off the flange and dropped the turbo sufficiently to put a thin piece of plastic in the slot. Like Gramps, I am glad - - got plenty of stuff out in spite of grease, going slow, etc. No way I want to work on a hot manifold by letting it run while working on it - - nope. And, I am not taking the chance of stuff getting in my turbo - - nope. Just fussy. I still remember having blower vanes blowing thru my windshield. I will protect that thing at all costs. Just takes a minute to drop the flange once you find the right tool for getting at the two back nuts. :P

ChickenBob

Re:Another pyro (install) question

I didn't remove mine. Clean out as much as you can with magnet and let it idle for minute or two (no boost) If you do unbolt, make sure you have a spare gasket.
Tim

CTD99,

I unbolted the flange on mine when I did the drill and tap. As I posted elsewhere, it's much much easier than you may think and you will have absolute peace of mind knowing where every chip goes. Suit yourself on what you do, but I'd unbolt and drop the turbo.

Re:Another pyro (install) question

Well, I took the lazy way out and did it without dropping the turbo. Got the pyro and the boost hooked up yesterday, everything appears to be working well so far. Still waiting on my tranny line and the FP isolator so I can complete my gauge setup.

Re:Another pyro (install) question

I unbolted and dropped mine about 3/4" and placed a sheet of aluminum in between the flanges. Used vacuum cleaner while drilling, grease on the tap, and fired her off for about 5 seconds, with the plate covering the turbo. Clean as a whistle and easy too. ;D

wk

Re:Another pyro (install) question

I left mine on and drilled very slowly and reapplied gerase very often. I then used a magnet to get as much as I could. When I started the truck up, I didn't see anything blow out the tailpipe so I guess I did a good job.
