Another Exhaust size question...
Alright, I know that we've heard these questions a million times, so now I'm going to ask it.
Do I go with the 4" straight or 5" straight? I've heard that the 4" sounds better and the same for the 5". I definitely don't want to lose any power with the 5", because I know I don't have over 500hp.
So, anyone have any good facts and what not to convince me one way or the other?
Thanks fellas.

Not quite related, but I dont want to start a new thread...
Is there any disadvantage to 4" Duals (Silverline) and how do they compare in sound? The Exhaust Im looking at is Turbo back. Im thinking of adding the Cooleaze too, but $300 for a **** elbow is not my idea of a bargain...

I just intstalled my 5in. system. LOVE the sound. I Didnt really need a 5, would of been just fine with a 4.... but I just had to have the 5in pipe with a 6in tip. No power loss at all!!!

Thing I dont quite understand is that a 5" system is the normal upgrade for 3rd gens and they dont seem to have issues with them loosing power, so whats the difference with the earlier trucks?

there may be a few different reasons for this, one 98-02 stock produces 235 hp/460TQ (except for high output motors will be a little more)versus 600 motor at 325/600. Couple that with the 2nd gens cast elbow outlet at 3.5 inch versus 3rd gens 4" outlet, going to five inch from a 2nd gen is a much larger jump than in a 3rd, thats a lot more air to make up for.

Ohhh... I didn't know the third gens had a 4" elbow, I was just thinking that most mildly BOMBed 12/24v 2nd gens easily exceed the stock power levels of the new trucks in their stock trim. Thanks for the info

I read posts on TDR w/ guys w/ 3rd gens falling off a little by going to 5" exhaust on a stock truck... but crank 'em up and it's pretty much a wash...
if you wanna turn heads, bigger = better
I constantly get local guys asking "what did you do to that thing to make it sound like that?!"
the turbo definately helps, but you can't go wrong w/ 5" straight... run a 4" downpipe and run the 4" back somewhere between the tranny crossmember and the cab then 5" from there. if you go 5" right off the downpipe, I don't think you'll have any complaints about performance. warning, it's gonna be loud, but there are ways to fix that
