??? Hay I change oil an filter at 7000 at the price of the oil there is no better protection for your engine than good clean oil. If it costs you $100.00 to change your oil every 7000 miles that comes to about $ .014 cents per mile THATS CHEAP PROTECTION at least to me it is.
That is ...014cents PER mile not even 2 whole cents. Do it right change them both.
Bob

??? HAY, thats cool. I got a friend here at work that changes his every 3000 miles which to him is about once a month with the miles he drives. I personally don't like laying under my truck that much and am getting the same protection for the same cost or less with the filter system I have. I can also change my filters out in five minutes or less where I have them located and I'm done till the next time.

I ran my old 89 up to 60000 miles on the same oil and it was still good when I drained it at that mileage. Got the test results to prove it and can fax them to you if you would like to see them. The truck is still running and has not been touched and had 142000 hard miles when I traded it. I kept that oil and ran it through two of my cars till it was all gone finally. You have people from both ends of the spectrum here so you have to run what makes you feel good.

Re:Amsoil users
I use the 15-40 Marine Amsoil and change filter every 5k and change the oil based on analysis. So far after 52k miles, 1 change at 40k just because I couldn't wait any more. The oil analysis was still great.

Don Miller
97 2500, 16 deg tim, Scotty II, 3k springs, #8 plate......
INjectors cmoming from Piers (hopefully today), new 4" from Rip on Monday.

Re:Amsoil users
I run 10W40 amsoil and I change the filter at 5,000 and oil and filter at 10,000. I called amsoil awhile back and they said if you change it more your wasting money. The oil is not even close to need changing.

Re:Amsoil users
how much does it cost to run that oil analysis? I am currently running rotella 15-40, and have been wanting to switch but it sure ain't cheap, and I could not find it anyway last week. However sitting here doing the math I would only have to run 25000 on a oil change to be money ahead, and then you add the protection on top it's starting to look like it well pay for itself in the long run. Does anybody know of the easiest way to get amsoil and that by-pass filter setup??
Thanks
Heath

Re:Amsoil users
According to Amsoil, both the 15W-40 HDD & marine, and the series 3000 5W-30 HD diesel oil can have change intervals up to 2 times the engine manufacturer's recommended change interval, or six months, whichever comes first. Intervals greater than that can be used if supported by used oil analysis reports. If using Amsoil's SDF full-flow oil filter, it is recommended to change that every 7,000 miles or six months on a diesel engine. If using another manufacturer's oil filter, follow the engine manufactuer's guidelines for changing filters.

Other than being more expensive and a 30 wt. oil, the series 3000 claims to offer better fuel effciency over the 15W-40.

I'm currently running the Amsoil 15W-40 in my truck since early November and only have about 6K miles on it. I use the Fleetguard Stratapore filter, it's less expensive than an Amsoil SDF and is approved by Cummins for this engine. I've changed the filter once so far at 3K miles and added make-up oil. I will end changing at 6 months, unless I go with an oil analysis report.

Bottom line; it's good motor oil, but you're not going to be saving any money using it. If cost is not an issue, there are other quality synthetics out there as well, such as Mobil Delvac 1 which is readily available over-the-counter. A lot of dino-based motor oils have been proven of extended drains in the Cummins as well. It's a darned good engine. Just because I use Amsoil, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best.
