aluminum lock box
Howdy all,
I have noticed that my lock box turns things black. Seems like it is oxidizing? Would painting the inside help? Or some form of coating?
Thanks in advance.

Re:aluminum lock box
It is oxidizing, and from a chemistry stand point, I don't think there is anything you can do to stop it. If you keep wiping it off, you will wear a whole in the box (with enough wiping )
Maybe a roll-on bed liner might work?

Re:aluminum lock box
That is what I thought. :'(
How well would paint take to it?
Tired of putting stuff inside the lockbox and having them come out black.

Re:aluminum lock box
Had the same problem you do Rattle. Here is one way not to solve your problem: I put contact paper (shelf paper) inside mine to line it. It worked for a while then it started getting holes worn in it, overall, not worth the effort.
If you are going to paint it, use something made to stick to glossy surfaces and clean out the box (as best you can, that stuff used to look like someone took graphite and smeared it all over the junk in my tool box).

Re:aluminum lock box
Go to Home Depot and get some of that thick black runner thats for floors (get the stuff with the ridges). Then get some Motomaster spray on truck bed liner from Canadian Tire. Clean the inside of the box well with a degreaser (alcohol, Xylene or something similar) - it might be a good idea to scuff it up inside before you spray. 2 or 3 coats should be good.

A bed liner is a good idea. I bought a can of herculiner and used it to coat my dad's aluminum tool box. Cleaned it up first then scuffed the surface. Easy to use, just used a regular paint brush to apply it. Worked good so far, its been about 8 months. Gonna use the rest on the nerf bars on my truck.

Re:aluminum lock box
The spray on Motomaster stuff is pretty good (although nothing like actual Linex, Rhino, etal). Its fairly abrasion resistant, "CHEAP" (like $8-9 a can) and is easily reapplied. Its also good for covering up things that tend to rust like hitch draw bars etc.

To all of us that live in the States, Motomaster is a brand manufactured for "Canadian Tire" in Canada. It is a store similar to wal-mart, but more oriented to automotive.

Re:aluminum lock box
Good point Mike...sorry I should have mentioned that.
I WISH Canadian Tire had the same lubricants that Walmart carries south of the border - I would be extremely happy then.

Rattlerattle;
I work in Aircraft and the only thing that will stick good, is "zinc cromate primmer" (its's green) then you can put any kind of a top coat you want on it.
