Air intake and exhaust???

Just got my truck a month ago ... all stock. I'd like to free up the intake/exhaust. What would be the most economical way to do this?

I was looking at the AFE system on eBay, which is running around $175. I know about the BHAF, but by the time I buy the filter, cover and build the heat shield, I was thinking the AFE wasn't too much more.

What are some suggestions for the existing exhaust system? I will, most probably, change out the existing exhaust to 4", but that will be a future project. I'm still trying to recover from the initial truck purchase.

I am just looking to free up the existing HP/torque and get a little better fuel mileage ... want to keep that "53" block happy!

(No, that was not an invitation to start another "53 block" thread )

Cheers,
Andrew

piperca,

Tthe AFE is our choice, but be cautious as we only reccomend the Pro Guard 7 filters for the diesels. The standard 4 later gauze filter no matter what the manufacturer will let a lot of dirt into the intake tract of your engine. See the info below:

Concerning exhaust I would reccomend our MBRP T-409 or aluminized systems. 100% welded on hangers and a real muffler with ceramic blanket and stainless steel wool packing that won't blow out and get loud over a few months etc.

Give us a call at the office we will be glad to help you. Plus we GUARANTEE all of our prices.

I wouldn't worry about running the BHAF without the heat sheild or cover. I ran mine that way for 40-50k miles and it was fine. And that included some stream forging and mudding trips. As a matter of fact, I put it on my buddies truck and it's still running good. Two of my other friends are running one without any cover and their's are doing fine.

Save your money. Stock exhaust is good to about 375 hp, and stock air filter with boot removed good to 500 hp. You won't see any difference in fuel economy or power with either mod on an otherwise stock truck.

But you will see a difference in EGT's with the mods. I hope you are budgeting for gauges.

You will want to bomb your truck in stages gauges first: boost, fuel pressure, pyro and trans temp. Next intake and exhaust to get the most efficiency out of your engine especially when you start adding performance modules (more fuel).
