Air filters and chips
I'm new to the forum although I have watched it for quite awhile now. What is the general concensus for using K+N air filters and causing turbo damage? Also what chip would you recommend for towing (9,000 lbs.) and fuel economy? My truck is a stock '01 2500 24 valve high output with 6-speed manual and 4wd. Truck only has 67,000 miles and I have replaced the fuel lift pump. I have been reading about the FASS system, any opinions on its value for our Cummins? I get about 18 mpg when not towing. I'm sort of old school with the mind set of more power = less economy but keep hearing about more power and better economy. I guess efficiency is the reason. Thanks for any help.

Welcome to DTR..
A lot has changed over the years with new programmers coming on line for the older 24V engines. If you are going the filter route there are many options most of which (IMHO) are better than K&N for bang for the buck.
First off, get the upgrade for your truck that you will like. Most of the digital versions now come with monitors so you don't need to go the gauges route. Other uploader type programmers will require you to get gauges on the side as well. With any upgrade, and even on stock trucks I suggest gauges anyway. Its always a good indicator of how well you are using your new power and if anything is starting to wear/act up.
I leapfrogged the VP44, so some reading here with the search function and browsing the online DTR Store will get you in the right direction.
Good Luck!

My feeling with K&N is the only problem with them is the owners not following the service instructions and also by over servicing them.
Many people on these boards are just parroting what they've read and have never even used a K&N.
It seems to me that if K&Ns ruined engines like many people like to claim that K&N would quit offering them.
How could they stay in business with a product that causes thousands of dollars in damage?

All kidding aside I do not believe they are the same product they were years ago. I can recall looking at one and seeing the huge holes in the filter media that K&N claimed the oil was supposed to bridge those gaps
Looking at a K&N last year it did not look like that old one I saw years ago, my bet is they did indeed upgrade the filter and I would not be afraid to try one.

The K&N issues for me came from the ScottyII air systems that originally came with the 0880 K&N filter until they started to collapse, then it was AFE until UNI stepped up to provide a solid 2 stage filter.
The K&N I had for a 96 360 Gasser I had leaked constantly at the gasket to the cover, flimsy material and not enough seal. A year later they offered a tube of grease for the seal to "maintain adequate seal" Anyway, check out Lary's store and see whats available.
