Aftermarket K&N style Air Filter

Who's using a aftermarket K&N style air filter? I need to replace my BHAF and I've heard stories about K&N's getting sucked inside out. Summit sells a Air Raid brand for $40 that's a 4" in that my buddy has had success with on his 1st Gen. Although he doesnt see over 26psi. I really dont want to spend $80-100 on an airfilter if I dont have to.

i have had mine on for about a year now. seems fine. have hit 30+ psi a couple of times and nothing has ever happened. and there isnt any coating of dirt on the turbo either.

my truck came with a kn and I am not a believer in them, but when I have gone to check and recharge the filter I see no dirt or dust or grime down streem and all is clean. I was thinking the turbo effect would cause problem but all is well and will keep it. no fan of the BHAF UNLESS they are kept out of the engine heat. Ed

K&N and other cotton-type filters fall apart under boost. Go the paper route and stay with the BHAF.

Huh?? Virtually every twin system uses "cotton-type" filters, like aFe. Some of these systems are generating 65-90 lbs. of boost. Never heard of one them "falling apart".

If you do not want paper and want an alternative to the cotton filters...check out UNI. You can get double layer foam and I/we tested these in Baja as well as with over 200K miles on high boost trucks all over North America and the results where impressive. I do have one big caution with any filter that needs to be serviced...cleaned and oiled. You have to do it correctly. Under oiling and over oiling can cause problems. Follow the instructions carefully.

the k & n do not filter well at all we ruined a motor in a 94 we installed a new one out of the box, ran it until it was time to clean it and polled a oil sample, there was so much silica in there i could not believe it. the bypass on that motor is horrible we took a new one out of the box and held it up to the light and you can see light around every stitch, cummins has bulletins out warning of this and if you do a search there is at least a hundred pix of damage caused by k&n. fram oil filters is another product to stay away from, go buy a lf16035 fleetguard and a fram and cut them into with a hack saw just cut the outer can and all will slip out, for about $30 dollars you get to compare junk to a filter

When I was building turbos...half of the stock turbos from Cummins and Powerstrokes that came through our shop were prematurely damaged and the customers all said they had K&N Filters. We always recommended paper elements.

i have a k&n. these stories make me wonder a little. i checked out wix`s filters. now does this go right on the turbo or the intake tube? what about heat if it goes right on the turbo? also i read a thread in here somewhere about the intake tube. lead me to believe that the stock one was better than the k&n the stock one doesnt let a vortext before the turbo where a k n does? thoughts on this... this is all new to me just tryin to learn
