Might be like a pinched return line not allowing fuel to return to the tank.

You've got lubrication problems to the VP44. Either dirty fuel, or not enough fuel.

Is he putting ANY Additives in his tank?

ATF?
Power Steering?
Brake Fluid?

Something is screwin' his pumps up. Whether incorrect additive, to much additive, water in fuel, or not enough fuel. The problem isn't the VP44.

Could you ask him about the additives?

Thanks,
Merrick

I agree, there is something really wrong here - the VP44 isnt junk, it has some issues but it can live a long life.

Nope, nothing but #2 pump fuel. Filter regularly changed, no known water issues and no known kinks in the lines. It has been suggested that he add fuel additives to add extra lubrication to the pump. He said he might try this one.

Talking

1 bad VP44 shame on you, 2 bad VP44's shame on me!!

There is something else wrong with that truck, it usually comes down to the lift pump, and fuel and fuel filter issues.
Also modifications could be a factor.

Agreed. The first VP probably went out due to dead LP. The second was probably not installed right.

I second the above posts on something else being wrong.

Hohn, how could you install the Vp-44 incorrectly? I did have one truck that only went 3 mos on a replacement pump but that was one of the black Czech rebuilds that were out there for awile. I replaced it again and it's been good for years. It would be really interesting to run a fuel psi gauge on your friends truck and monitor it under running conditions. I'm wondering if there is a restriction on the inlet side somewhere (in tank, lines, etc...). I have 44K on my VP and lift pump. So far so good.

If the pump gear jumps a tooth on the cam gear, it would mess up timing, and probably short the pump out,,, atleast that's what I've been told.
