aftermarket harmonic dampener Are they worth the cost
I have a 97 180 HP motor in my Ford with the ZF5 trans and have a lot of gear rollover noise at idle.It will go away above 1k rpm so I have been thinking about setting idle up.The original clutch for this trans was a dual mass for this reason. I had changed out the origanal clutch with a solid mass with the 7.3 and also had this noise but not as load as it is with the 5.9 more harmonics due to two less cly. Is any one running one of these and if so the fluid type or the stock type.

Viscous style Balancers are a good choice for any engine, in my mind really. They dampen better than Elastic types and don't really run the risk off coming out of time compared to the Elastic ones. Anything to help improve the balance of the crank is a positive.
Also, if the stock one is old there is the chance it is out of time. Oil, oil vapour and running high RPM's can cause them to fail. The oil will cause the rubber to slowly start to bunch up. Once this goes on for long enough the outer ring can not rebound/dampen properly and you will get vibrations. They can also actually spin on their inner piece and that rubber, causing them to go out of time with each other (the inner and outer pieces).
Once I start working on my valve train and throwing more into my rig, I will be purchasing the Viscous style.

Mine is governed at 3750 rpm right now. I could tighten the springs to get more out of them, instead I am getting a 5k kit. I'm planning on around 4500, or wherever the power drops off first.

I did some searches and found some old post that say they help with vibration and clutch and trans noise. Some say they help out the 12v motors more than the 24 due to them having more vibration to start with.
