After market intake...

Re:After market intake...
Doug,
I think any intake system that includes some sort of an airbox is going to be quieter than one that is just shielded (part of why I am staying with my stock box and a K&N for now).
I see the Scotty as the highest flowing in this category, since it has a low restriction element and a form-fitting air box.
Now a paper element is likely to pass less noise, so if you had a BHAF in a housing, then you would have the quietest setup.
A guy might check at the truck parts store, or a salvage, and pick up a filter (housing and all) like on the big rigs. Just food for thought.
As for a quiet performance type muffler- I have one that I took off because I decided it was too quiet. It's a 3" Stanley muffler for an Allis Chalmers tractor. It has a long oval body with a disc in the center having an approximate 1 1/4" hole. That way some flow goes straight through, while the rest is scooped up by louvers. On the other side of the disc, the louvers are turned with the flow. It seemed to perform well, spoolup was a little quicker. Noise in the cab was just slightly more off idle, but decreased with increasing rpms. This was with 3" pipe all the way, no cat. The muffler has about a 1 foot outlet pipe, which was attached directly to the stock tailpipe. When outside the vehicle, lined up with the pipe, noise was a little louder than stock- a little more rumble, and some whistle from the turbo. You can probably find one of these at your local farm supply (I bought this one at Atwoods), or if you would like to try it, mine is available.

This is under load. I could be wrong here, but I think that the aFe is good to only about 150F or so. On the noise front, the Scotty in hush mode is quieter than the MegaCannon, or at least my customers that I've switched away from the Cannon have told me.

Rod

Re:After market intake...
thanks guys! wow good comments. as I suspected, Scotty hush is still a good sweet spot between EGTs and noise. I can't see how it would be that much noisier than stock, actually. Rod, as for the 200 degree reductions, how close would that number apply to an ETH with Hx35, EZ and DD II's, and stock exhaust? probably, without exhaust, I'd still push EGTs?

yea, I'm trying to stick with stock exhaust if possible, to keep the noise down. maybe I could get by with it running empty or lightly loaded with no tow.

hey VinDiesel, thanks for the suggestions. What I'm trying to explore are my 'quiet' options for 4' exhaust systems, should they be required. In other words, If a scotty hush needs more help in the flow department, and I have to junk my stock exhaust, then I'm going to be looking for a quiet 4" system if there is such a thing!

Hey Rob, I don't want to take this thread off track, but tell us about the filtration system you got hanging off the left fender there. Is that a standard Fleetguard filter with a bypass alongside?
[/quote]
Nope, it is a Amsoil by-pass filter, but not a standard fleetguard filter next to it, I wish they would make it so it would accept one though.

I will keep that in mind........by the way, if your dump bed is down and your batteries fail, how do you get to them.....
The batteries are held in place via the spare tire winch, (with a saftey of course) just crank the batteries down, also I have a receptical on the hitch, and the mate on my jumper cables, so I can get/give jumps.
Later, Rob

It would depend on outside air temp and altitude. I've got a few guys pushing 350 BHP, stock exhausted, and a Scotty (both inlets though) who sit at the 1100 range at WOT.

Rod

With my mount, there is no addtional filter holddown, it stays put.

Latere ,Rob
