Thumbs up Advanced the timing...

The other night i had eric (cumminsdriver) bump my timing for me. Havent touched the timing since its been back together. When we put it back together i decided to just start at 20* and see how it ran. It ran pretty good like that, but EGTs would sky rocket pretty much as soon as i hit the go peddle. We advanced the timing up to 25* just to see how it would do. The first time we set it, i guess it pretty much slipped as soon as i tried to start it. It would absolutely just not start. Finally it started but it was running real rough and was blowing the most awful lot of white smoke youve ever seen. I figured it might have just a little air in the lines from where we had to take some injector lines off, but after letting it idle for a little bit and then trying to rev it up some, we just decided that the timing must have slipped. So we pulled it back into the shop, get the motor at TDC again and check the dial indicator. The timing had slipped to about 7* So eric retimed it again, but this time we put a little more effort into making sure the shaft and gear were as clean as possible. Started it up and she ran smooth as a ribbon. Took it for a test drive and was extremely happy with the results. EGTs climb MUCH slower. I can still bury the pyro if i want but it takes a LOT more effort to do so. Boost is also down about 5lbs. I can tell the turbo takes a little longer to spool but you cant have your cake and eat it too. Im pretty happy with the truck so far. Ocassionaly i can break the tires loose on the 1-2 shift Got a snow stage 2 water/meth kit that will be going on soon as well

25* isnt really that much compared to some other big time pullers. Some guys around here are running 30-35*

On a pulling truck I could see that much timing, but how is your smoke levels on the street with that much timing?

Lenny at DDP said that above 20-22 the DDP4s will start spraying out of the bowl. I have wanted to try advancing mine to 25 or so and see what happens. When I went from 17 to 21 it make a world of difference.

I have been driving the truck this week since i snapped my input shaft. EGT's are definately down. Smoke is very controllable if you keep your foot out of it. Of course if you wanna black out the whole highway just put it on the wood and your wish will be fulfilled I dont really feel like the injectors are out of the bowl, because it sure is a smooth running motor.

Josh/Eric:

Glad to hear you've got at least one truck to run!

I've had my timing at 23* since last year with a stock HG. I run New Era's 435's and when I did the head this spring there were no spray marks across the tops of the pistons. So, I would think that the 435's stay in the bowl pretty well at that timing. Hard to say anything about DDP's as haven't tried them. I do hear they smoke less though.

I do have more problems with haze/smoke on take off but of course don't build much boost at all unless I really let into it. Who knows, I may bump my timing up a couple more degrees and see what happens. Trying to design a different fuel plate to ease into more fuel a little slower. The #100 dumps all early and it is tougher to get the temps back down. I'm looking at reversing the slope on the bottom end and then straight up.

Now get Eric's truck back together.
