Adjusting fuel

Adjusting fuel
I bought a 96 2500 4x4 and I think it need some fueling adjustments. The previous owner told me that it has a #11 plate in it. It has a very very narrow powerband where it feels like it is powerful, from about 2k to 2200 rpms. It smokes heavy black, too excessive I believe. My father has the same truck as me, same year just a 2wd and his seems quite a bit pepier than and it is bone stock. I don't know if I am getting too much fuel perhaps? I do want to get some sort of mileage out of it also, so I think I need to dial back the fuel some. What do I need to adjust to change this? I have looked through the various tech articles but cannot find any procedures for wringing the maximum out of it. If it is truely 280/680 with the 11 plate it should be about 65/240 over my fathers truck but it is obviously not. The only other thing I can think of holding me back some would be the stock exhaust that has 325k miles on it. I already replace the fuel filter and it has a K&N filter in it. I want to us some giddey up go before I can afford gages!

check the placement of your afc housing. it covers the fuel plate and it controls low boost fueling. if you slide the housing to the front of the truck and loosen the starwheel inside the cover you will get alot more low end pep. my advice would be to move the plate and housing as far forward as possible.

I second the GSK and the governor adjustment. Make sure the arm is not riding under when it contacts the lower lip of the plate.
Id also check for boost leaks and make real sure you arent raising EGT past the safe point with all that fuel and lack of air. That much fuel with no gauges is bad bad bad.
Sounds like a lot of fuel was added without a lot of air. A turbo would be on my list with this truck. Also your clutch wont last long with mods on the truck.
you need gauges before you mod the truck. Unless you like the idea of a rebuild caused by melted pistons and a cracked head.

I straight piped it last night and got a little better low end now, faster spool up. It still needs a little adjustment on the fuel. I need to look into buying a good set of gages it looks like. What is the number that I am looking for on the egt's that is too high? My last tank with it I got 20.8 mpg so I guess I can't be dumping that much fuel out the exhaust.
