'96 12 valve questions

What are some things to look out for on the 12 valve trucks? This truck I'm looking at has 178,000 miles on it. Are there any fuel system issues that might need attention? Also its a 5spd and I know that there was a problem with fifth gear coming off. Was this still an issue in '96? Thanks in advance.

over flow valve, KDP if its not done, other then that not much I can think of as long as its running good not much to worry about. and yes '96 will/could have the 5th gear problem . Solid truck though and those miles are nothing to worry about.

P.s. has the truck been modded in anyway if so does it have gauges? cause no gauges and mods could = hot temps = bad news

The truck has EGT, Boost and Fuel Pres. gauges. It also has the banks GIT kit and the fellow said its tuned to 320 hp. I did some research and figured out what the KDP is. I'll have to ask him. What do you mean by over flow valve? I hate the though of needing to drop the tranny and fix the fifth gear. Unless he's already done that. I wasn't too worried about the mileage. I mean after all it is a Cummins. Thanks again.

Its the overflow valve in the fuel system. A bad or worn-out one can cause hard-starts.

The fuel system on the engine will probably start to develop airleaks at some point causing hard starting. It is a matter of replacing the fuel lines, removing the fuel heater and replacing the overflow valve so it isn't too bad.

The other likely problems are related to the front end but you probably already have encountered them with your 24V trucks.

The 5th gear nut is still an issue on the '96 I believe.

Thanks again guys. It doesn't sound too bad to change. Again I'll ask the owner about these things. He's the original owner and the truck is very clean so maybe he's replaced some of this already. What front end issues? On my 24v trucks, all I've done so far is change ball joints, axle seal, tie rods and one uni-hub. I assume those are what you're talking about. Is there a certain time or mileage that the fifth gear falls off? Or does it just happen whenever? Thanks again.

5th gear nut is an issue on any NV4500 - were some attempted fixes later, but problem still exists - the 2x4's are affected way more than the 4bys.

So, where's the Stude 4x4 in your handle?

The Stude 4x4 is right here.
More pics can be found here: http://http://s158.photobucket.com/albums/t95/stude4x4/

It is a 1958 Studebaker. The pic on the left is before all the modifications. Mods include four wheel drive conversion using factory Studebaker running gear. 37" Boggers, power locs front and rear. The engine is an original Studebaker 289ci bored .030" over, aluminum intake, high performance carb and cam, water injection and a rajay turbocharger. This used to be our wheelin' rig & tow rig until we bought the '01. The Stude pulled great but the Cummins pulls AWESOME!

Thumbs up

That's neat, with the Commander chrome trim and paint scheme - first 4x4 I've seen, iirc - I've built a few Studes in my youth - some with Cadillac V8, some with Pontiac GTO V8, some with Chevy 396, one '50's p\u with Chev 350, one Lark with early Chry hemi, one last-issue Lark p\u with a 2x4bbl Avanti engine and BW auto - none of the trucks were 4x4, tho

Thanks for the memories, dude.................

BTW - you're right on the Cummins - just a tad more power, there.
