81 MM garrett turbo bottom

I have an 81 MM inducer Garrett M24 based turbo. The compressor housing is .96 A/R, and the exhaust is 1.3 A/R 90 trim. I think it will make a heck of a bottom turbo for my hybrid. What do you guys think?

This turbo is pretty big. it weighs about 50 pounds, and is about 12 inches diameter at the compressor volute.

It's large...a B2 is 75mm, 1.32A/R exhaust housing, 95 trim I believe!

It will spool a little slower than a B2, but I would think it would light ~2K RPM.

Try it

oh, great you said that!

This one guy is full of BS, he says he is gonna order a 88 mm to use as a single. i said he wont get boost at 5000 rpm

It also depends on where th 88mm is measured from...88mm MAJOR diameter would be a decent turbo depending on the trim.

Now, 88mm minor diameter would be LARGE for a single, unless you're sledpulling!

for clarification guys, the 81 mm is the minor diameter on the inducer. I will get the major diameter for you.

I was thinking that with 370s, and full cut DVs I could probably light that thing pretty quickly. I guess this thing is pretty comparable to a full b2 on the exhaust side with a little larger compressor. I am going to start ordering the parts for the hot pipe now.

Do you think a gutted 14cm housing would bypass enough air, or will I have to get a external wastegate? I was just thinking about running the stock wastegate, open the bolt on the boost elbow, and reference the back of the wastegate diaphragm to the primary pressure. Do you know if I can reference the back of the wastegate diaphragm, or is the shaft sealed?

12 Valve, there is absolutely no way anybody could get this thing to light as a single on the street. This thing might light if you held it in first gear for about 15 seconds at 5000 before you shift. even then, you would be lucky to get 20 psi out of it.

Turbocharger wheel trims explained: http://www.turbominivan.com/tech/turbo201.htm

( Trim = (minor diameter / major diameter) ^2 * 100 )

okay, you're probably right. this turbo has a 96mm minor diameter on the exhaust turbine. What kind of boost do you think I will be able to get out of it with 450 hp? 20? will it be very effective in a twin set?

96 MINOR on the exhaust side?? That's large!! A B2 is 95mm MAJOR!

That could help spool, but hurt it at the same time! I would think on a 12v, it would spool OK, but it will be slower than a B2.

How many RPM you running?

you will need a lot more fuel than you are running. i am thinking a 13mm pump with some big showerheads. do you want to sell it????????????? i have a plan for mine, i will run a hx55 as the small turbo and a monster like that for the big one. but i don't expect any good boost till 3200 plus rpm.

I was a little worried that it would be too big for my application. I have an auto, so it shifts at 2800 rpm. I would think that at about 2500 rpm in third gear it would start pulling. I just want enough cooling for 370s, a 10 plate, and half cuts or 191s. I know that twins are the ultimate way to do this, and I thought the breathing ability of this turbo would keep the drive pressure very low, while giving enough head pressure to the top to keep it efficient up to 60 psi.
If you are seriously interested in this thing, PM me. I am not completely opposed to selling it. I would like to give it a try, but it might be more involved than I want to get.

An update guys, I have decided to use this turbo for the bottom. I am running a 4k gsk, but in an auto so I shift at 2800 rpm, as this is the top speed that you can shift an auto at without computer mods, or manually shifting. I have the hot pipe built with the exception of welding the turbo flange to it. It has a 3.5" turbo discharge, so I am going to use some PVC to fab up a pattern for the cold pipe, and maybe even see if it will hold up for a run because I won't be able to resist. I think that I will be able to get it spooled by about 2200 rpms with laser cuts and 370s, especially with the top turbo spooling hard. I will finally get to start working on it a lot because I am returning from deployment.
