I have seen 38's on a 3.5" lift ..
You may need to do some minor clearancing as the fender wells just aren't large enough for that diameter tire.
I have a 3" lift with 35's (315's) and have NO Problems at all ... i've put 38's on and have no issues (didn't drive that far.) an i'm looking for a set of 38's now.
Just keep in mind when you go that large, all SORTS of new problems start creeping in.

I have a 5in lift and my 35's are way too small. I say go with 38s, at least thats what i want to upgrade to next. I love the new Mickey Thompson ATZ's they look awesome, try those out.

I have 37's with 6" and I can easily make them rub.....I wouldn't go bigger than a 36 with 5".
Fender trimming or not, if you compress the suspension with the wheels turned, it'll rub.
