5" Straight Pipes

Hey I was wondering if anyone has a full 5" exhaust system on their CTD and if so where can you find some good pipe at a reasonable price so I could do it myself and cut out the installation cost. And are there any precatiouns that I should be wary about when I do the install.

Well I wouldnt consider my exaust "full" 5" strait pipe, but It has about 3' of stock 3" down pipe and the rest is 5" strait pipe from the transmission crossmember back. I have inside connections were I work so I got 2, 8 foot sections of 5" pipe for free and built my exhaust myself. So all it cost me was time and about $40 for a 90 degree bent 5" diameter pipe. It works well and sounds great! I did fab up my own hangars though.

I dont know if having a 5" down pipe is feasable because of the pipe being so big and not a lot of room to work with...so I just left my stock 3 incher there and went 5" the rest of the way.

I have heard that a 5 inch exhaust is bad for power on a stock cummins though.

Why would the 5 in exhaust possilibly hurt a stock CTD? Would a 4 inch have any adverse effects then if I went to that?

4" would be fine.

The 5" has a lot more volume of air to be moved out of it... Not sure of the exact science behind it, but you need more air coming in for it to really work right. Not experience, learned from reading...

You mentioned working well, can I presume that you mean no adverse effect on MPG and gobbs of power? My curosity is in that I have access to some 4" pipe and have considered doing some fabercating my own, I am not so sure as to advantages of going oversized or cutting the muffler out. Sorry for stealing the thread, just curious.

I got my 5" turbo back system off of e-bay for $300. The kit came with a 4" dp, all the clamps I needed,(and a couple extra?), an extra 3' piece of 5" tubing,(probably for an extended cab truck), a 9/16 socket and 3/8 drive ratchet!! I think it took me about an hour and a half to install it by myself. I didnt notice any effect other than it sounding so much better!

actually, I couldn't tell you what difference it made after I cut off the stock exhaust, because it was on there for only one day. but I get good mileage 20+ and have plenty of power from the low end on up.

If I were you that stock exhaust would be off already

Staight Piping It

New to the forum and to owning my truck! Love driving this diesel and want it to roar. Man, I chased a Dodge down the road that had the sound I wanted. Every light he came up to I tried to hear the rumble and roar. Looked like it emptied under the bed.
I heard having it not come out the side will create a soot problem and be WAY too loud. I can handle a good loud exhaust, or at least I think so.
Do I need to connect a 4" to the turbo to get the most sound, or am I cutting off down below and clamping on a 4" for a bit and then point it down?

My welder and I are argueing over how to connect the downpipe. I say just cut it off at the bend and put a 3-4 on it and start welding. He says to fab. from the turbo back. I suppose I could pout and get she who must be obeyed to buy me a system....

I cut off about 12" off the stock 3" down pipe and fabbed the exhaust after that. I have a home-made 3" to 5" coupler that use to go to the 5" pipe. The coupler just has two slits cut into it and a clamp to hold it onto the down pipe. It works great...no leaks. Plus if I need to take it off I dont have to grind down the welds.
