5 inch with muffler or not

I was just curious as to whether or not a muffler would need to be used on a 5 inch exhaust system. Im going to install one soon on my 99 dually. Since I live out in the country, offending the neighbors is not a problem. However, i was wondering if the small amount of back pressure from the muffler would help out the turbo. I have heard that a small amount of back pressure is a good thing. Any help in this matter would be great.

I have never heard that diesels need back pressure. No muffler will be louder only. No performance gains (from what I hear). Why 5" and not 4"? I think 5" is for over 500hp. My brother has a 4" with no muffler. It's not too loud inside. Very loud outside.

5" without muffler is going to be wildly loud, with the muffler and you still get that sound at WOT but it's toned down under light throttle and idle.

Before I put the stacks on, I was running 5" without a muffler and it didn't bother me at all. I think you'll like it straight piped.

I thinking you might be right, ive always been a straight pipe guy. However, im worried that the in-cab drone might wear me out. The truck already has a straight made from the stock exhaust, and the in-cab noise can be wearisome. Im still up in the air about size, a 5 inch sounds downright angry, but a 4 inch sounds good also. But you know what they, "Everything is bigger in Texas."

The 5 does have some wicked drone while towing, but I really like it! On long hauls I wish it was a bit quieter than it is, but 99% of the time I love it! The louder the better! Im sure In 10 years I'll have a different outlook!

I live 20 miles south of Lamesa. Im thinking the 5 inch just would be so much better with the straight pipe, so im going for it. My horses are gonna kill me over the noise!

if 3" wears on you, definately put a muffler on the 5" system... it'll talk to ya, that's for sure!

Well, I used to have a 350 ci Chevy with 3 inch straight duals with 6 inch tips, they were fairly loud. I handled them, so i think ill be able to withstand the nasty growl of the 5 inch.
