I am in durham as well. When i bought my truck it had a 4" turbo back with just a muffler. If you have any troubles come inspection time send me a PM and ill tell you where to go, but you should be fine anywhere you go.

I've never had a problem with mine, it is a 24v though. I'm registered in Nash County but my last couple inspections have been in Raleigh.

If you get scared, shoot me a pm, I'll tell you about a place that you will pass.

(in Raleigh)

Yeah I may come out and just watch and have some fun, I've still gotta see whats going on that weekend though. Thanks for the help, I really wanted to do a 5" exhaust but I don't have $500 to go out and get a 5" cat, so a 4" may be the way to go.

That thing in front of the muffler IS your cat, go get a 4" exhaust and then you can modify the 3" inlet to 4" and have a cat if NC gets picky. Right now I have a friend-------Mine gets inspected with 4" turbo back straight pipe. I did have it inspected at an inspection center and they only look for a muffler. If you need a hand let me know.
Is the rear outlet on the cat 4"?

Yes, the pipe between the cat and muffler is 4", I recommend saving the cat, and if needed in the future cut off the 3" inlet and weld on a 4" inlet.

i thought light duty diesels were exempt in NC until late 2007? I dont know of ANY inspection stations that have checked to see if thier is a converter on a diesel truck.(NC that is) If your converter is still there, it's not working anyhow. My 01 only gets a visual on lights and the toot of the horn every year. They dont even hook up to the obdII port because it's a diesel.

Yes, that's true, but they do look under them and if you get a smart tech, he or she MIGHT realize there is no cat.

What are the disadvantages of keeping the cat on?

I could obviously run without it on the truck, but if I got CAUGHT I would face a huge fine correct?

If there are really no disadvantages to taking it off I'll probably just keep it on to be legal... man I really wanted to do 5" though.

Isn't there a way to keep the stock cat and do a 5"? Cause with a 5" exhaust you'd want to have a 4" downpipe anyway...

Do the Fords and Duramaxs also have cats in their trucks of similar year?
