4WD Launching

My buddy figures my truck is a POS and I'll get my doors blown off by a stock 3rd gen a friend of his has. So it's drag race time. I roast my tires doing a 6 lb launch. How are you guys going about launching in 4WD? When do you shift back into 2WD? Do you let off the throttle when you shift? Thanks

Leave it in 4wd until you go through the traps. It will not disengage until you let out of it for a sec. anyways.

I slide it out of 4x4 about half way down the track... just out of habit. As stated, it won't release till you let up. Some places I race, it's a full time job getting stopped before the pavement runs out .... and it's easy for me to forget about 4x4 till I try to turn off the track

I would say if you launch around 10 psi you'll take a stock 3rd Gen. Are you racing at a track? If so, leave as soon as you see the last yellow.

Take it out of 4wd? Last time I was at the track I shifted into 4wd as I pulled into the staging lanes and I shifted it back to 2wd 4 hours later headed through the exit gate out to the highway.

If I could make the return road I would do the same thing!

EDIT Yes!! The mans pride in his work and rig are at stake. That's racing!!
Beside if he get's stomped by a stocker it will give good indication of what has to be done yet.

Dont launch any higher than 10 psi. You might risk taking an output or input shaft out.

This guy's been my best bud for 37 years. He's jealous because he drives an AstroVan. He's always telling me this guy's done everything to his truck that you have and more, that guy's got the Banks, 24 valve, best of everything. He's diesel illiterate. He needs shutting up.

He's telling me the stock 3rd gen beats Hemis. Is he full of #^@? Do they really go that good? What's the ballpark 1/4 times that they'll run?

Oh, and thanks for all the tips.

Not sure what they run, but I raced a 3rd gen and we were even. I consider myself mostly stock.

How about 'don't launch higher than 0 psi'?
Safer with a stock turbo... yes. Many have no trouble below 10 psi...yes, for a while.
But it appears you already know that... from your signature

2500CTD - You are 45% over stock @ 274/580. Any stock 3rd gen will beat any stock 2nd gen, IMO.
