4k gsk

I have the 3k and want to put the baby spring in for a 4k kit. I know i'll need the 60 lb springs but to safely run at 4k frequently will i need hardned retained and special keepers or will a 12v with just the spring safely run over 4k

Well u can buy

a 4k kit from MDW, on hot rod diesels, and you can run it in the truck, but it is not reccommended that you run all the way to 4K frequently. You only have to change the exhaust springs if you are gonna run the motor hard for safety reasons, but IMHO it is best to change all of them if you are gonna run the motor hard frequently.

just changing the exhaust springs is for running an exhaust brake. and i dont need a kit as i have the 3k kit I just need the baby spring. I know Ill need the 60 lb valve springs. however is that all I will have to worry about or will i need hardened and titanium retainers and keepers. also is there any bottom end issues running those rpms?

the bottom end will be fine, the retainers are a must, i got lucky and pulled my head and found all of my intake valves were pulling through the retainers. some were pulled in .150 or so. i shifted it at 4k more than a few times and it would spin to 4800 or so doing a burnout.

the valve spring retainers. Gunracer was who i was thinking of who had his valves almost drop. The springs keep your valves from floating at high rpm. but you can actually pull the retainer through the spring. I know haisley sells a hardened retainers and titanium keepers.

Can I get by with just the retainers? and what would they cost?

Exclamation

I just installed a 4k gsk today...

i have done that about 4 times yet...

i started it up, after everything was done, reved it up, to see some 4000 rpm, but no good results... poping and missing like crazy. it wouldnt go to 2000 rpm!

i dont think ive done something wrond, since i checked it again, everything seemed right. anybody could tell me the problem???? Cant use the truck like this! Just finished the twins today! cant use them like this!

Not to steal this thread but I have a question about the retainers pulling through. Is this due to the increased valve spring load or due to the RPM pounding the keepers? I am ordering my gov spring kit in another week and dont want any problems! I was planning on installing the 3k gov spring with the valve springs and not the baby spring at this time. Am I asking for problems?

for a 3k you wont need the valve springs. and from what ive deducted it's the rpm thats pulling the retainers. gunracer shifted at 4000 and would run it up to 4800 frequently. that being said if I was you id do the valve springs and put in the baby spring. you smaller pump prolly wont even pull to 4k

Thanks for the responce. I was planning on doing the 3K then going from there. The truck is stock but is also getting the KDP killed, gauges and a 10 plate real soon. Its all getting ordered next week but I want to install things one at a time to make it easier to track the problems, if any, down. Also it will give me a chance to log some readings before it gets to much abuse. I dont really want 4K RPMs but like you mentioned I do have the weeny pump. A good solid 3000-3500 RPM is all I really want. I also figure that 236k on the stock motor that new valve springs are a smart investment.

Well I went with 3k and it pulls hard to 3000 and will run to 3500/3600, but i now want more (isn't that how it allways goes) either way you go the gsk will make your truck more responsive. You should also consider getting it timed. 16-19* you little pump likes higher timing

Timing is going after I catch up with the snapon man. That is probably a few weeks down the road. Thanks for the input.
