4in. exhaust

4in. exhaust
I want to go to 4 in. exhaust to try to keep EGT down and have a better sound. I live in Reno, which requires a smog check. Do I need to keep the converter? I think the cat is 3in, inlet and outlet. If I cant lose the converter, I can't go to full 4 in. The exhaust is not stock. It is someting from Banks; I bought the truck this way. EGT's are not out of control, about 700 post turbo max; I just want to keep them down as much as possible. Of couse, I will move the probe pre-turbo when I install a new exhaust. I know the EGT is safe now, but I believe lower is better. Is this correct? Also, how can I confirm if the fuel plate is stock or someting else? I also need to check my timing and make sure the pump is adjusted properly for whatever plate is in there. Any good shops in the Reno area? sierra Diesel injection didn't seem very helpfull. They won't set the timimg at anything but stock, and referenced a Powerstroke for Egt numbers. Lots of questions, but everything has to work together, right. Still want a bigger exhaust, if I can get by the smog police. I wish I could just tell them the truth, "the CAT doesn't do anything on a diesel anyway"

At 145K I bet the cat is getting pretty much plugged. I guess I can't say anything about removing it (the forum has a rule about his), but look at my sig for my opinion. As for the smog check, some states actually look for the cat others don't. I don't recall reading if NV looks for one. As for timing, go to 15.5 - 16.5 or so. Someone from the Reno area may chime in with a name of a shop that'll help. I know there are quite a few TDR members from Reno, maybe you can find one of them. Now to the fuel plate - stockers usually have two rivets holding the "cam profile" to the mounting plate. Aftermarket units are usually one piece - at least all that I've seen. Look for signs of chipped paint on the screw heads areound the afc which is located on top of the injector pump over by the master cylinder. The afc has a hose running to it (about 3/16 dia) from the intake manifold. You'll make that thing fly with a #10 and a set of injectors - of course it'll be running hot (say upgraded turbo) - and you'll probably be able to slip the clutch really good (say high performance clutch) but it'll move and definately put a grin on your face.

Thanks for the info. I was looking into the #10 and GSK, but didn't want to get too hot. Cam plates and gov springs are cheap, but new turbos are a little out of range right now. I'm gonna play it safe for a while, make sure the setup in there now is tuned properly, and save my clutch. I'm off to the UK for a week, so I'll have to check the AFC items you mentioned when I get back. Wish I could go play with it now though.

ludwick_j,
Install the exhaust system yourself or have a local muffler shop do it for you, usually less than 1 hours labor. We have systems in aluminized, 409 and 304 stainless that bolt right onto your truck using the stock rubber mounts etc. The resonator/cat you have will not effect your actual emmissions, but check with the locals to make sure they are not "looking" for the can itself. Call us if you have any questions etc we will be glad to help you.

I have the 4" DPP system front to back and love it, sounds great and I had it installed in 1/2hr myself. Price was right, next time it will be 5" from mark (DPP). The sound is awsome, cab noise not bad, some people say it's to loud inside my truck, but I like it. As far as "what will it do for performance"? Some people claim thier sytem's will increase you HP by 10%! In my mind, NOT! It will help with your EGT'S, espiecaly if you are going to modify your truck, you'll need at least the 4" system. BUT! You will gain the saticfaction of seeing the look on other peoples face of horror as you blow by them on the freeway. And there's nothing like pulling up to a ricer at a stop light with your tail pipe next to his/hers open window. .. The look on there face is PRICELESS! ... Not that I do that or anything.

Ludwick, check out a recent thread I started regarding 4" exhaust and some options here https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...hreadid=66882.
As I'm trying and hoping to get back to Colorado along the front range and ALL vehicles have to be smog tested I raised some questions and thoughts about helping to control EGTs with larger exhaust components. Also, during my checking things out I measured my cat and the inlet is 3" while the outlet is 4". If you can "read between the lines" here you might get some ideas of how to deal with keeping your cat and still get a full 4" exhaust installed. I have some PMs I got from one of the responders that I could send you on this topic if you'd like - just let me know.

TEXWS6,
You'll see an approx 10-15 HP and 20-30 lbs of torque, but mostly it's EGT droooooop you're after. Some folks even feel they get MPG gains too! We have a lot of different systems to select from call us if you have any questions etc.

Rocky, thanks for the link. I remember reading some of that post, but never followed it. I wasn't interested at the time but I am now. I guess if one got a system with easy and short installation time, he could swap before testing? Not the best way to go, but it would work. I really don't like the idea of the cat. Sorry if I get in trouble with mods. On a diesel, if this converter is designed for a gas engine(which I believe it is) It won't do much for emissions anyway. Another problem is that the catalyst burns up and the converter is clogged. Then the inside starts to rattle and you need a new one. But, the vehicle would still pass the emissions test as long as the thing was plumbed in; Even thought the engine is not breathing properly and is horribly unefficient. Sorry for rant. I don't want to break any laws, but my truck would be just as clean without, if the pump is setup properly.

u want the truth??...altering the factory exhaust in any way is illegal...dropping the cat is illegal...altering factory pump settings like plates and springs is grey area/borderline illegal....timing above 14.5 is illegal...make u feel better??
i shall remain silent from this point on

No. It doesn't make me feel any better. Oh well, my truck needs to run properly. I'll leave it at that.
Anyway. I'm planning on poking my head into the truck today to see what I can about the current pump setup.
