4 or 5" exhaust?

Ok, I know that if your're not above the 350-400 hp level, that a 5" exhaust system actually hurts your trucks performance. But my Q is this: how much louder would a 5" system be compared to a 4" system, both straight piped? I am considering one of those combo deals on ebay, 5" exhaust and comp, and just wondering if it is worth it to give up a few extra ponies for a LOT louder exhaust system. Give me some needed input yall.

But how much louder would the 5" be vs. the 4" (both straight piped)? I have never heard a straight piped 5" system. I do plan on upgrading the exhaust and would need some more info before I make my decision.

mine is loud and proud... I've been told it sounds like a semi but since I'm driving I can't confirm that.

i know this guy that has 5" pipes...straight to the back.....extremely loud. you will eventually get annoyed at that rumble if you spend any length of time driving. you will "out grow" it.

Oh my, I suppose it takes a New Yorker to say he would ever "out grow" the sound of that Cummins music

4" single stack it to the passenger side. Thats my recomendation. It will seriously hurt your mileage though, not because of itself, but cuz you will constantly mashing the go-pedal to here that sound .

Just for clarity-- the 5" will improver performance over stock. But not as much as a 4" will if you aren't moving a lot of HP.

Personally, I plan to run the 5" so I am not having to redo the exhaust when my truck has twins.

I don't really think a typical 5" system is any "louder" per se. Keeping all things the same, except of course the pipe diameter, the 5" system will tend to resonate a little more. Turbo whistle is more pronounced out the tail pipe, and your exhaust note will tend to be a little lower pitched, helping it carry. 5" systems are known for in-cab "drone" though, so if your aim is complete quiet inside the cabin, don't do a 5" system.

Having said that, I'll never do a 4" system on one of my own trucks since I went straight to 5". She's got a heckuva bark when you get on the throttle.

Yep, we've got an aluminized one thats not a bad system. DPP hasn't started making one yet, so this system uses clamp on hangars and whatnot, but its still a decent system.
