3rd gen turbo ?

What is the difference between the 3rd gen and 2nd gen turbo? And has any one retro fit one?

The 3rd gen turbo is an HY35 with an electronic wastegate on the 04.5+ trucks. You have an HX35. It would be a down grade for you. Now, if your talking aftermarket turbo then it oughta bolt right up. Might need to clock the housing though. A turbo's a turbo for the most part.

For the millionth time: THE 3RD GEN TURBO IS NOT AN HY35....
Yes it has features like an HY35 but it is NOT!!
The model numbers for the 3rd gen turbo's are HE341W 03-04 and HE351CW 04.5-07. The 03/04 Turbos have a 56-58mm comp wheel w/9cm comp housing and the 04.5-07's use a 62mm comp wheel w/12cm comp housing both turbo's share the small 9cm turbine housing and turbine wheel size.

The housings on the new turbo's adapt to the trucks charge air system and exhaust system in totally different ways. Not worth the hassle of upfitting to an older truck.

It is a different turbo.

What I find amazing is I know plenty of people have dyno'd over 500hp on a 3rd gen. with a stock turbo. I don't think a 2nd gen. could do that with a hy9

I had a thread about this a while back. Main reason for swapping IMO would be the 4 inch outlet right at the exhaust housing. It has to be able to flow more air for that reason alone on the exhaust side. Id almost find one just to try but by the time I spent the $ Id be just as well off to have an aftermarket one on it, unless someone wants to donate one for the cause .
