3rd Gen Turbo 04'

We have a 04 core motor we bought to take parts off for a 04 that was robbed for the injectors, push rods, valve cover and fuel rail and other stuff it was cheaper to buy motor than piece by piece anyway have the rest left in the shop the turbos spin freely and very little shaft play how can you make this work on a 2nd gen I love the way these turbos spoon from down low an all the way up anyway if it will work Id like to know how I want to try it on my 96 thank

The turbo will work, but you will have to use the elbow and a down pipe from a 03-04. The main problem will be that the 04 turbo has a 9cm turbine housing where as the 96 has a 12cm housing. The smaller housing will spool a little faster, but will also get hotter.

Is it an 04, or 04.5 turbo? Does it have a black electrical solenoid on the front, or just a simple brass elbow and silicone hose?

Does the number plate say HE 341 or HE 351?

You're in luck, the black solenoid is the only turbo worth swapping out. 04.5-07'. That turbo has a 60mm compressor wheel compared to 54mm for late HX35. Many trucks have hit 500+ HP with the He351.

I does spool well with the 9cm. I think it does a lot better with EGT's, but that has alot to do with fast spool up and larger compressor wheel. Fast spool up is better at controlling daily driving/towing egts because the fast spool controls excessive exhaust temperature before they become a problem.

For example, Large 66mm single hotrod turbo might be at 1250* before it even spools up well enough to slow down the rapid egt rise.

He351 will spool at 1K rpm if you pull a slight grade in a really tall gear. A larger turbo will just buck and surge in that situation. And because the HE spools so fast, it starts to slow down egt rise around 850*. Most street driven trucks are not "in it" long enough to run into egt issues when the turbo spools at 850*egt because by the time you hit 1300* or so, you are going 80 mph.

Now running WOT down the 1/4 mile, or dragging a sled are much different and I think the tight exhaust side will hurt you in that scenario. But for the daily driver, I think the 3rd gen turbo is a good compromise between spoolup and more top-end grunt.

Would the compressor housing from a 2nd gen work with the HE CHRA (with a bit of lathe work of course)?

Don't mean to hijack, but would a Hx35 off of an early model 04 work decent on a 01 235 SO? I have my turbo sitting around and know of a truck that could use it.

The housing on the He351 is held on with a v band clamp. I think the HX35 has a bolted sleeve assembly. The inside diameter of HE housing and the HX are within 2mm so I'd guess they could be lathed and made to mate up. It's just that vband clamp vs. bolted sleeve plate that i'm not sure about.

An early 04' turbo is a He341, which is smaller. I have never been able to convince anyone to measure the compressor on the HE341 so I don't know if it is any larger than the HX35. I have heard claims of 54mm, 56mm, and 58mm, but I don't know. Could you measure it? I can convert inches to mm or whatever. If you don't want to take it apart, you can cut a card to where it barely slides in the inlet of the turbo and get a good approximation. You would then need to precisely measure the card.

If you have a micrometer and big set of snap ring pliers or some bent nose needle nosed pliers from Harbor Freight, you can take the compressor housing off and get a good measurement.

Dieselman, I see you already have a hybrid 35/40. Some hybrid 35/40's have a 60mm compressor already. I don't know how much you would gain, but maybe the HE351 has a larger major diameter on the compressor wheel.

I know that the HE351's have a stronger shaft, very rarely see them snap.
