3rd Gen Headgasket on 2nd Gen

Has anyone tried to modify a 3rd gen head gasket to fit a 2nd gen?

I know a few guys are modifying 3rd gen heads to fit 2nd gens, so the gaskets shouldn't be too hard to modify.

The idea is that a lot of newer trucks are running insane boost, nitrous, water injection and twin turbos on their stock gasket. Just thinking out loud that maybe those cummins MLS gaskets would hold up really well in our trucks.

Ideas, comments?

Its just another Cometic gasket, so it wouldnt be any more reliable than the one for our trucks.

What makes it hold up on the third gens? What's different between the two heads and blocks?

There are clearly different quality levels of MLS gaskets like any other part.

Cometics on a 12:1 street machine is a far cry from a 16:1+ 20+psi boosted vehicle.

Just much different cylinder pressures and running conditions. The MLS gasket for the 3rd gen is obviously developed for a specific application.

The other differences I cannot say. But I think MLS gaskets generally speaking are very sensitive to deck and head flatness. I would say clamping force is about the same between both head designs. And the way the fuel is injected could even play a role on cylinder conditions and pressures as well.

Agreed
Cometic sells both the OEM third gen style MLS and the MLS Phuzion
I'm going to guess the difference in the third gens and us older style engines is cyl pressure from the different types of injection and timing. I dont know it for a fact but it would seem logical that if they hold on the third gens it has to do with lower cyl pressure from the multi event injection and timing? That said I dont know if the Cometic MLS is holding up in the third gens or not as I havent heard of anyone trying one yet.
