The measurement is from the top of the stud to the nut that holds the springs on. What you need to know is how far down the stud the nut is located. By putting the nut back on the same distance down the stud you will have the exact amount of "preload" on the new springs as you had with the originals. You could get the same information by counting how many "turns" it takes to remove the original nut and then installing the nut with the same number of "turns" but it is a lot easier to just measure the distance.

I didn't have a way to measure mine when I put them in so I counted the turns when I took the old ones out. Put the 3Ks in same number of turns and it worked perfectly, no change in idle at all. Don't worry too much if you don't have a way to measure them, most of the advice I read before installing mine said you may have to readjust them a click either way if the idle changes much anyway.
I thought the fuel plate was cool when I put that in, the GSK made it much better.

Real quick question..... how do you "bar" the motor over..... isn't there a place to usa a ratchet or do you have to turn the crank?

I put a socket on the alternator pulley and just turned it (as instructed here). It works better turning in one direction than the other - I think it turns better backwards than forward but it still works. It slips if you try to turn it forwards.

You have to move the governor lever way up the plate or it will be a pig off line, peak hp to high rpm, and hot egts.

I got mine from Piers Diesel www.piersdiesel.com

So the 3K will not be good for towing due to higher EGT's? I do need to tow my 12 K trailer a few times a month......

You missed the little part. I'll make it clearer.
You have to move the governor lever way up the (#8) plate OR it will be a pig off line, peak hp to high rpm, and hot egts.
You can tow just fine with a GSK. In fact towing or hauling is much nicer with the extended rpm.
GSK is not a plug & play install. You have to work with the other pump variables.
