3k gsk ???
i just bought a 97 ext cab 5 spd 4x4 with 80,000 miles on it from a dealer so i dont know whats been done to it. i think that it has a 3 k gsk in it cause it revs to 3000 rpm. im pretty sure the 12v are suppossed to cut out at 2600 or 2800 rpm, but i know the plate hasnt been messed with......yet So whats your guys' opinion on the gsk, if it does have it, which im really thinkin it does, im glad, cause thats one less thing i have to do to it. oh it was owned by an older guy that didnt drive it much, but it did have a fifth wheel plate in it, which is fine, cause im puttin a B&W turnover ball in it. thanks in advance

Rev'n to 3k doesnt always mean that it has had the governor springs replaced. When I had the lift pump changed on my 97 at Cummins Southwest I seen the mechanic buzz mine to 3400 sitting in the shop. But you get out on the road and it flattens out about 2800 or so. If the springs have been changed you will be able to spin the motor between shifts up to 3k and have full fuel. Meaning you wont feel that flat spot.
If things havent been changed save up for a set of 3k springs and a #10 plate. Then you will be ....

I've heard a lot about the 3 gsk and want to do it badly. The question is, how difficult is it to do and what might I expect the results to be? I am fairly mechanically inclined (brakes, belts, oil, minor maintenance - did change my power steering pump on this beast) but I've always hesitated to mess with the fuel system.
I flatten out anywhere between 2600 and 2750 RPM and would like to see it hit 3300 or 3400 with some pull.

Here is the instructions that most people use. I use the nerve racking method of going right down thru the throat of the pump. I take the plate out and bar the motor over until I see the first spring and go from there.
I usually run the motor up to between 2850-3k between shifts when we are towing the 5th wheel. The 3k works great with the stock 30lb valve springs. If you want to spin it much high than 3k or so..you will need to replace the valve springs with the 60lb flavor. Then you could install the 4k and have no issues..
