3000 rpm springs

3000 rpm springs
Just got my #10 plate and 3K springs today from Piers (a BIG thanks to them and their sales guy, very helpful and great listeners). The plate looks very straight forward, but the spring install is calling for a Vernier caliper to measure the governor stud. I can get one but was wondering if this was necessary or if there is a "trick" to this install?
Thanks for any info.

Re:3000 rpm springs
The calipers are so you put the tension at the same point, if you don't do it that way you can either count the clicks as you back them off to take the springs out and when you re-install the new springs go to the initial click then go (2) more, put it back together and see were the idle is from were you started, if it's low like 100 RPM then you need another click on each spring, if it's close the adjust the idle then go for a test drive.

Re:3000 rpm springs
If you're going to measure them, be sure to measure each one separately. Mine were different. I measured the depth from the top of the stud to the slot in the retainers. I re-installed them to the same height and had no problems with the idle. They did seem a bit loose but people told me this is normal. Hasn't blown up yet in a year and a half.
The worst part of the whole job was getting the plug back in the side of the pump. The air was pretty blue around me.

Re:3000 rpm springs
Go with the calipiers .
It will keep you from going in more than once.
It can be done by the clicks like Don said but you may have to take it down more than once.

Re:3000 rpm springs
Idle is about 100-150rpm high. Tried the calipers, but they didnt work in the tight area. How does one lower the idle, cause the manwell once again is VERY vague. :

you've got that right! just use an 8mm socket and take off/out the shut off solenoid linkage. it's hard enough to thread as it is, with the bracket still on it has to be aligned dead perfect.
tighten springs= higher idle
loosen springs= lower idle
duke, 1 click on both springs is a little over 100rpm or so either way so i'd obviously say go down one click on both springs.

Re:3000 rpm springs
The idle speed screw is at the back and towards the bottom of the pump. It threads through a boss on the pump and has a jam nut on the bottom. You'll need a 10mm open end wrench. The throttle lever has a tendancy to wear a slot in the screw over time making it a little tricky to get the desired RPM.

Re:3000 rpm springs
Well I adjusted the idle with the bolt on the back of the pump( where you said Berner) . Is this good enough, or sould I go back and loosen a click on each spring? I definatly get enough RPM out of 'em.

Re:3000 rpm springs
At the Tulare Diesel Showdown last weekend..I got a lesson on the art of installing the 3k GSK from Piers and Harry. I learned the most nerve racking way of doing it..right down the throat of the pump! When I got ready to pull the 10 plate out...I ask if I needed to mark it location...BPine said naw ..just pull it out.
Then Piers took over and I watched as he did one of the springs...As he worked he explained what he was doing and why. When he had finished the first one..he turned it over to me. I began to sweat and shake! But you know once it was over...I realized it was not as bad as I had thought.
The adjustment was one soft click and then 2 more solid clicks. When I started the truck..the idle was a little low. Piers said that one full turn on the idle screw should do it..We adjusted it one full turn and it was dead on....
WOW what a difference when pulling our trailer...It was one of the best BOMB's that I did. The #10 plate and 3k GSK is the ticket for towing..
