285/75/16 E or D's Which Brand?

I'm wanting to upgrade to 285/75/16's.. but I'm really wanting an E rated tire. What's out there for E's.. BFG's.. what else... I've been running the Michelin 265 LTX's since the truck was new.. (200K) Great tires.. lots of mileage from them.. no problems.. just wanting something bigger..
The other question.. some of the weight ratings for the D tires in the 285's are within 2-300lbs off the 265E.. Usually a big difference in the max air pressure.. Just not so sure about dropping to a D rating.
Or should I just go to a 305/70... (What about that tire on a stock Al rim??)
Just looking for a little more tire.. with a little more aggressive tread.. and something that going to last.. (I've been spoiled with my Michelins..)
Thanks, for any help.. and pic with 305's on stock rims??
Thanks guys,
Bryan

Bryan, my parents have been pulling 10k horse trailers since 1998 on D rated tires and haven't had any issues. I've been running d's for 6 years with no problems from mine. 305's on a stock rim will look great. You might have a little rub on the lower control arm with them though. I know I did with my factory rims. But nothing real serious.

Toyo MT's, I haven't heard anything bad and the look incredible. Huge size selection, with lots of E's.

I'm currently running BFG AT's 285/75/16 D's, they now come in E's also. I'll go with either the BFG's E's or the Toyos in E.

I haven't had any issues with my D's, I don't tow alot or carry much weight, but I figure it came with E's for a reason.

Definity Dakotas are made by Cooper and Pepboys carries them. They had a special a couple weeks ago, buy 3 and get 1 free....and it applied to the 285's!!! ~$380 for the 4.

IF....you want a QUIET tire, the TOYO Open Country A/T's are nice tires. If you don't care about noise, go with the TOYO's the others recommend. I paid about $800 for mine, mounted and balanced from Les Schwab. The taller 285's fill in some of that gap in the wheel well & look SWEEEET on our trucks too!!! Maybe next time I'll look for 295's as that would be about PERFECT (for my truck)

Found my old email!

Do not go D!

I went from 265/75/16 E to 285/75/16 D. Result? Wandering on the road and unstable in turns, highway banks, etc. Just went from the 285 d's to 315' E.s WAY more stable in turns, even with a larger sidewall.

People do get away with D's, but realistically it depends on the tires. Its just not worth the hassle though, stick with the proper tire.

Your insurance company can also deny payment if you have the improper load tires on your truck during an accident. Consider that.

This is what i was told:

By replacing the tires on your vehicle with tires that do not meet or exceed OEM standards, you as a driver assume all liability. Insurance premiums will remain the same, however, coverage is limited only to comprehensive when the vehicle is parked.

Thank you for your inquiry,

If you do decide to go with a D, be sure to look at the weight ratings on the manufacturers website. BFG 285Ds are the second highest weight rating in the D rated tires. If you look at the 305D, it's the lowest. The difference is something like 2910lbs on the 305 vs 3305 on the 285. That ~400lbs is what keeps me with 285 instead of trying the 305.

I've drove my 285x75x16 bfg a/t D's for 12,000+ miles, no problems.
I run 45 front and 40 rear PSI, and the truck drives excellent.
Around curves, highway speed, whatever.
The ride is decently soft also, prolly helps the front end from crapping out early too, since the tires arent e rated w/ 80psi like rocks.

I'm also looking for tires , but narrower for me , the wider tires get less fuel millage .
I'll have to give the Pep Boys a call , that sounds like a great deal , not sure witch is most important , want millage on both fuel , tires & price , but the bottom line is always it , it would seem that what is good for one is good for the other .
I've got firestone steeltex , 265 75 16 d , 44,000 on used junk yard tire [ almost new when bought ] about 1/3 tread left , now a pot hole gave me tread separation , need new tires early .
Best price so far $496.20 mounted , my Centramatics are paying for them selfs .

Thanks guys.. I've really been looking at the Toyo Open Country's.. but they are D rated.. but they are rate at 3300lbs.. but at 65psi...

From Toyo's Site http://www.toyo.com/docs/tires/tires...=lgt-suv-truck
LT285/75R16 122Q* 302000 7.5-8.0-9.0 53.1 16 32.8 11.3 15.0 3305 65 636
They do make a 295..
LT295/75R16 123Q 301210 7.5-8.0-9.5 56.7 16 33.3 11.6 15.0 3415 65 624

Those Toyo's MT's are sweet... but are they going to hold up to lots of highway miles...
LT285/75R16 126P E/10 33x11.50R16 360280 7.5-8.0-9.0 68 19 33.0 11.6 15.4 3740 80 628

i just called them again today about it and the special is still going on. balancing and mounting the 285/75 R16 Definity Dakotas with tax will be just shy of $500. BUT you have to send in for the rebate for the free tire. so initial cost is a little higher....you cant walk in with $500.

i really would like to try a 255/85 R16 but they are $$$ and i have only found 2 options, one being a mud terrain.

Everyone that I have talked to with the Toyo MT's raves about them, ride, performance on and off road, and especially wear! It sounds like it almost the perfect tire for our trucks.

They have a large selection of E rated sizes.

Ya me too , after reading this , I gave Pep Boys a call , I've got steel stems , in mag rims , so I do not want to pay for the rubber one , I've got the Centermatics so I do not want balancing , the rebate work with all that .
there quote $684.07 - $138 = $546 , there may not be tx ? added yet .
I've now check a bunch of places today , the first place was the best , even beat the tire rack , Firestone transforce HT x4 = $496.20 .
