24V Head Gasket Removal = Stumped????
Well I thought I could do it all myself and remove the head off of my Cummins as I blew the headgasket 2 days ago. I did great until I got to the lifting off of the head. I can't figure out how to get the las 4 pushrods out to remove the head???? If it's a fight to get it off, I can't imagine putting it back on. I'm going to torture the new head gasket at that time. Does this all make sense to any of the Cummins guru's? Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I really need some help on this one!!!

If your just doing the gasket, be sure the get your head magna fluxed and tested for true. It will probably need to be decked, but these heads are known to crack and a few buck for a manga test is well worth it. The last time I did mine I though it was the gasket, but ended up being a cracked head. Also pull the injectors before removing the head there easy to damage since they protude out the bottom. Other things often forgot are the fuel return off the back of the head, and the head sitts on dowels so it need to go straight up first, may require a pry bar the break the seal. If you have any trouble be sure to buzz.
Hope this helps a little,
Good luck,

Also remove all sensors from the head before sending it to the machine shop, ask me how I know, did oil get in the coolant? and did you let the truck sit for a day before you drained the oil, I got a good amount of coolant out that way, and it took about 10 flushes to get the oil out of the radiator, I used Lestoil as recommended by the guys at my local Cummins shop.

I flushed mine by putting in a thermostat with the center punched out, starting with the coolant level down 3 inches in the radiator with the radiator cap off, idle at 1800rpm and pouring a handful of Cascade into the radiator.
It would produce oily bubbles then subside. I poured in another handful and the oily bubbles re-appeared then subside. I kept this drill up until the oily bubbles quit appearing.
After running with this muddy brown coolant for 20 minutes, I flushed the system clear with a piece of PVC pipe in the top radiator hose overhanging the front of the truck and garden hose to the top radiator spout...whatta mess but it cleaned the coolant system .

I used an engine hoist to reinstall mine. Plywwod on my gravel driveway and the hoist rolled just fine. Lowered the head down to 1" off the deck, set to lower to the block perfect then installed that expensive gasket. Not a difficult job really, just kinda busy...I enjoyed it even in the 100F Tennessee summer.
