24v head on 12v?

I know it can't be done, but curious as to why it can't be done. Looking for a logical reason.
Thanks
Cory

bowls in the pistons are in the center on the 24v's because of the location of the injectors, the 12v's are offset.

So you are saying change pistons and you could run the 24v head?

no I think you would still need to relocate the injectors for it to work.

Injectors will re-locate in the new head.

Changing the pistons is the big thing, I think the cam will need to be changed as the rocker ratios are different between 12v and 24v, injector lines and injector return lines. This swap has been done before.

Pistons, injection lines, push rods. I have not heard the cam needs changed but I haven't done the swap so I am not sure.
Lines can be bought from any shop that has 24v p-pump conversion parts. The rest is easy enough to find.

WOW, I always thought it couldn't be done. So all the oil and coolant passages line up ok? Why don't more people do this? It sounds much easier than doing a p-pump swap onto a 24v.

i have heard that a ported 12v head will out flow a ported 24v head. so wouldent the money be better spent on porting a 12v head. whats a good port job cost?

you heard wrong

a well ported 12v head will flow about as much as a stock 24v head

I wouldn't say it would be easier. Doing a p-pump conversion on a 24v does not require even removing the head, let alone disassembling the short block and rebuilding it. Its all external components. If you didn't have a wrecked 24v to steal parts from, it would be more expensive to do that as well. A new 24v head can be had for around $1200, $1000 for pistons (I'm just guessing on that number), $550 for injector lines, then you need injectors, injector tubes, injectors hold downs (unless they are included), rockers/bridges (unless they are included), studs/bolts, thermostat, exhaust manifold, gaskets, valve cover, valve cover gasket, valve cover bolts, then fab up a injector return line, and so on. The big things are easy to accomodate for, its all the little crap that will nickle and dime you to death.

OK, but it still sounds kinda easy? Then you don't have to worry about the computer on the 24v. This may be a project I will try in the future.

Thanks for all the input.

I don't see anything easier about actually swapping the head vs. swapping the injection system. Cam still comes out, still need to deal with the oil delivery to the pump with the head clearance. Computer on the 24v is not a worry, I unbolted it from the block and its laying on the frame rail. Never an issue, not even a check engine light.

I guess I was just kinda suprised, everybody always talks about all the hype of putting a p-pump a 24v, but nobody ever talks about putting a 24v head on the 12 valve. Which would turn out with the same results. "Good flowing" head with the "high flowing" pump.

I would just really hate to buy a 24v head to find out it won't work, thats what is lingering in the back of my mind because I have never seen it done before.

Its a good idea if u have the money to do the 24v head swap. If money is a factor, I know that at least PDR and Dominator Diesel sell fully dressed, brand new, ported heads that are ringed with 60 lb valve springs for around 1700. Im not too sure whether PDRs comes with the gaskets or not but i know dominators does
