241DHD vs 271 Transfer case

Does anyone know the specifications on the 271 T Case? I probably need a new tcase, I just cracked my 241DLD.

Is the 271 a LOT beefier than the 241DHD?

What are the ratios of the 271 in low range?
IIRC the 241 is 2.72:1

THanks
Garrett

It's the same, but will not fit the pre-'05 (maybe '03) trucks - those frames are wider, front diff is wider, third-member is located further outboard to driver's side.

Maindrive centerline to outside chain-case dimension is 18.5" on 271, 13.5" on 241.

Main drive centerline to front drive centerline is 13.5" on 271, 9.5" on 241

Early trucks have only 16.5" centerline to inside frame rail.

In other words, it won't fit without modification. The switch from DLD to DHD is massive when you put two of them beside each other.

I replaced my NV241DHD with a NV271. The only modification I had to do was the transfer case shift linkage, and I had a flange put on the rear output shaft, so I had the rear drive shaft modified to match. I bought the 271 from Transfer case express and they setup the transfer case shift pattern to match my 241's.

I count three modifications in your post, alone, so you probably wound up with the GM version, which appears narrower, offa the top o' me thumb.

Which '02 truck do you have?

What did you do to address the speedo?

On my truck it did not have a VSS in the tail shaft housing. I do not know what year they stopped doing that, but I looked at an 01 and it didn't have it either. The direct answer is...nothing, the speedo worked without modification.

Nope it was ordered from dodge by transfer express. I elected to get a new one, not a rebuilt. They changed the shift pattern and add the flange at my request. It did not have to be done, it's just what I wanted.

I have a 02 dodge 2500 quad cab long bed.

'98 up the speedo is on the CCD bus, driven by the Powertrain Control Module and the ABS system off the sensor in the differential.

'02 had two distinct trucks - '94-'02 body-style, which had the narrower three-section box-type frame, and '02 up, with the new body style and wider one-section rail frame.

The 271 will not fit within the 3-section box-frame rails without some heavy-duty fire-wrench surgery, not to mention the problem with the front drive flange and shaft mis-alignment.

Still uses the 1.5" chain like the 241.

BTW, back to the original question - you should have no trouble with the 241DHD built with the 1.610" output shaft over the 1.370" automatic shaft, requires new 2.2" yoke at about 60 bucks

Mine is the 2nd gen body style. Name: racecar.jpg

The first person I know of that did the conversion was BigBadDodge. He has a thread about the install on TDR. He has a 2nd gen 12V, and as far as I know he still hasn't worried about making the speedometer work.

I still think you should race with a cord of wood in the back Paul.

[edit] oh yah, you gotta update that pic now, 11 second truck.

Thanks for the pic, Paul - could you post a pic of the fit between the left frame rail and the t\c chain case, and a pic of the front driveshaft offset, flange to diff yoke?

My new '06 271 would not fit without surgery - I'm hoping to stand corrected on this.

There is only one style of chassis/body for 02 2500 and 3500 trucks.....the switch over to the 3rd gen was not until the 03 model year. The 1500 was the only 02 model available in the 3rd gen platform of which a CTD was never available.

These will work with slight modifications, mostly the cross member and driveshafts.

It's a popular conversion for sledpullers and has been done several times.
