2001 Transmission shifting characteristics
Hey guys, this being my first auto trans diesel, I need some input. When startine out, it will wind to about 2100 RPM then gradually eaaaaase into gear. I had a dealer mech. drive it and he said it's what the 47re does. It also does the T/C lock unlock between 45 and 50 but I will try the Suncoast fix then the noise filter. Being a manual trans guy it is very anoying, but the wife rules. Thanks for any ideas you may have.

You need to fill out your signature so we can see what all power mods you have done, and does it slip when you first take off or when it shifts into 2nd gear, if it slips that badly taknig off, check your fluid level, if that is ok then I think you need some work done, what all mods do you have and how often do you pull with it?

Sounds about right. The converters in these trucks from the factory are very loose and will allow your motor to rev really high before it starts to work. Get an aftermarket converter and valvebody from any of the companies out there (I prefer DTT) and your truck will take on a whole new personality.

I don't think the revving to 2100 and then engaging sounds right. It should shift just like any other car transmission but a little firmer. I mean, are you talking shifting from park to drive, waiting a second, floor it? It should rev pretty high and then locomote you forward at a high rate of speed with hopefully a lot of black stuff exiting the exhaust pipe.... If the engine is spinning and the transmission is not engaging somewhat quickly check the fluid level (warm engine, at idle in neutral after several P to D shifts while stationary, on level ground), engine codes (some P0700 codes), and your bands. I don't know if your bands need adjusting going from Park to Drive (1st Gear) though. Maybe someone knows that....

dodge trannies suck stock. they have a bypass in the line pressure to avoid power build up. put in a shift kit and increase line pressure . they use a resistor to fool the computer. stock sluggish shifting is normal

Hey guys, it takes off fine, shifts to 2nd then the winding up starts, in town driving. If you really get on it, it seems to act better, although I drive like an old lady and that is few and far between. In OD on the freeway, it is great. I have not towed anything with this one yet, though I have a 31ft 5th wheel I plan to tow once I figure all this out, about 9500 lbs. Thanks for the help.

That sounds like a band adjustment to me. Trying to shift into 3rd but not quite getting there.... From reading the Greek in the operating manual it is either your front band or front clutch. Check slippage in D and then in 1 manual and 2 manual for takeoff characteristics. If it is happening only in D between 1 and 2 (doesn't engage 2nd gear but has "engine flare") or in D between 2 and 3 (shifts to second fine but when time to shift to 3rd you get the engine flare) are different problems. Other than that, the next step is above my pay grade (free) with an air and hydraulic pressure test....
