2001 Cummins = Too Loud Says Neighbour = Me GRRRR!!!

Yeah, it really is the whole *kkkkkkssssshhhhhhhh* sound that makes people think we're going so fast. It's just a big-mean-get-out-of-my-way-here-I-come sound ya know? Cause when I hear little rice rockets going kksshh, I just laugh. But when an 8,000# diesel truck goes KKKKKKSSSSSHHHHH just cruisin along shiftin at 2k and not even trying to drive aggressively, you know it's nothin but business.

... maybe all three if it was a slow night.

I used to try to keep my vehicles relatively quiet until the new neighbors moved in about a year ago. Constantly making a bunch of noise and having people pull in the driveway honking the horn at all hours. Neither of them work so the noise never ends. I asked them to keep it down a couple times and even called the cops on them once. Nothing worked so I decided to see how they liked it. I put a Flowmaster Super 40 on the gasser with no tailpipes and put a 4" straight pipe on the 12 valve. I work weird hours sometimes so Im coming and going in the middle of the night and they just love hearing the 12 valve start up at 4am come screaming by their house.
They want everyone else to be quiet and respectful but wont do it themselves. Last weekend they were over there hammering until 3am so at about 5am when they were asleep I took the 12 valve for a quick spin around the block.

ive been pulled over cause a cop heard me speeding one time, i was in my 2 door mercury grand marquis, exhaust dumped under the floorboards, i took the rest off, sounded kinda like a drag car, he was a full block away and heard me speeding, and pulled me over, he says, i HEARD you speeding coming up that street, i laughed and said you have a good day officer, what could he do LOL.
My buddy got an exhibition driving ticket in his 73 Nova SS a while back b/c the cop "heard" his exhuast and assumed he was showing off or what ever... too bad for the cop he had told my buddy about 2 weeks prior that his exhuast is illegal(which its not) and he was going to give him a ticket for it...
Funny thing is, my buddies(the one with the Nova) dad is a cop for the same town...

Keeping peace with the neighbors isnt a bad idea. Id do a couple of things.
#1. Ask them what time of day its too loud.
#2. Ask them if you could let your truck run in your garage or in front of the house, and then be in their house to hear how loud it is.
(honestly, the cab of a truck even with the windows down really makes it seem quiet.. it really could be rattlin dishes in their kitchen). Maybe even have a friend or family member do your daily backup/take off while youre in their house to hear it.
#3. Explain it does have a muffler, and see if its the engine or the exhaust thats loudest too them.
#4. From there, explain the audible volume is normal for a typical diesel pickup of its age, but you can do your best to research if you can quiet it down.
(additional muffler, sound deadening under hood are good ways to start).
Sure it will cost some money and you may not impress the other 2% of the people that like the sound..
But whats the value a good neighbor?
(disclaimer: i have straight pipe and no complaints.. but the first time i get one ill consider it an excuse to upgrade the turbo and new exhauast system!)

For the 2 minutes total that it runs shouldn't be an issue!!!! I never let it idle all I do is start it, back out, close the door and take off, that's it!!! This person is too ****...

dodgediesel,
Your story is a disgrace to law enforcement, but typical.
I too do all I can with my 02 HO to get out of my small, cul-de-sac, up-hill street as quickly as possible. I know its loud, from he factory. However, as a surgery resident, leaving can be at 4:45 in the morning and driving in at who knows when. I have neighbors who make comments about it waking them up in the morning. I just politely grin and say, "yeah, I know. Sorry about that." They know from the look I also give them, that if something ever happened like a cop pulling me over, they would find my truck plowed through their bedroom wall, revved to 4000, deafening them to the point of never having to worry about something being too loud ever again!
Someone who complains about hearing too much should lose that sense.

I had the same problem with a neighbor once whom I had never met. I did not even know there was a problem until I saw saw something hanging from a tree
Someone seemed to have done a big burnout in front of his house since the pictures....
