2000 dodge sluggish at times

i am asking this question for a buddy of mine, his truck will be running fine and sometimes it will just bog down and sometimes down to 3rd gear and 20-30 mph empty. and sometimes it will be fine. that lasted for about 2 weeks, and now he says it is always real boggy and blows white smoke real bad. i haven't actually ridden in the truck, but i think he is still driving it, it is all he has. he was asking my if i could adjust the timing and i told him that i didn't think i could adjust the timing and also that if i could, it wouldn't be what was wrong with it anyways, if it is the injection pump gone bad, then where can i get a set of injector lines so that i can put a p-pump on it? or would it be easier to put a old school ve pump on it?? or where can i get a really cheap vp??

Sounds like you need to pull the codes to find out what is wrong. There is no use guessing when the truck can tell you exactly what the problem is. If there are no codes, then the guessing begins.

As DD said, pull the codes. He could probably get most of them by turning the key to the run position (not to start) and then the off position three times but the third time leave it in the run position. Codes (if any) will appear where you normally see the mileage.

Re the Lift pump - does he have a fuel pressure gauge?

Does he have a fueling box and is it worse with the box on?

i told him to try to pull the codes like gandrews said and all it ever said was the milege. is there any certain ammount of time that you have to do it in, fast slow, what? and it does not have a fuekling box and he does not have a fuel pressure guage onj it. if he was to hook up a fuel pressure guage, what pressures should it read and what pressures will be too much-too little for that vehicle and he used to get 17-18 mpg but now he is getting around 10
