I am on my second set. The first set I ordered were 6" wide steel with a 225/70r19.5 tire. I got 89,000 miles out of them. I probably should have got more, but I am hard on tires. The second set that I ave now are 6.75" wide steel with a 245/70R19.5 tire. I got new wheels the second time because I wanted wider tires and they do not recommend a tire that wide on a 6" wheel. If I had been thinking in the begining I could have saved myself some cash. I really like these new tires they are M+S rated and are load range H. They are rated around 4800 lbs on a single application and 4500 on a dual application. If I did not have a dually, I would order the aluminum wheels.

Doesn't Rickson make aluminum wheels for the dually? Or is there some other problem?

Thanks,

George

Check out vision wheels. They are Alum 19.5x7.5 for $160 vs Rickson's huge cost. I did have Ricksons and I liked them but for $160 for aluminum vs $260 for Steel.... I'll go with the Vision's.

Any web address for vision wheels? Goggle search resulted in too much variety for "vision wheels".
Thanks

I refuse to run a inner steel wheel and an outer aluminum wheel. Lugs are not long enough for two aluminum wheels. Plus, I think they only finish one side of the wheels for looks. I may be wrong though.

Any chance at a direct link? Vision wheels seems to be some sort of search engine with limitless choices.

It's the Type 81. There was a pic of a truck sporting them floating around RV.net but I can't find it right now.

I have 19.5x6.00" steel dually wheels from a GM stepvan on my truck. I love mine! I bought 225/70R19.5 Hankook DH01 Traction Drive tires for all six spots! Check my gallery for pictures. I paid $45/each wheel, but I had to dispose of the old tires then stripped and repainted them. Still not a bad price for the upgrade! Only down side was not any increase in weight rating for the GM wheels I found. Maybe some had higher ratings. I went with the 225 sixe tires for snow driving. My experience is a tall, skinny tire is much better in snow than a short, wide one. So far this winter, I am not disappointed!! I have much better steering and traction with this truck vs. my '01 2500 V-10. Even though I have the training wheels (universally reported to be terrible in the winter) I actually have had less sway and slipping than my other truck. I think I had 265's on that 2500.

My tire:

Joshua, I like your solution to the expensive wheel issue.

A quick question, do the GM wheels center on the studs or axel flange (as the stockers do)? If on the studs have you had any problems with vibrations, kinda like they were out of balance .

Thanks, RJR

Zulusafari,

Once you wear out those 225's, depending on how hard you are on tires, after 100,000 to 150,000 miles, you could go with some 8R19.5's if you want a taller tire. They are like 33.5 inches tall and only 8 inches wide.

I agree... skinny is great. I had 245's and wish I had gotten 225s. I will go 225's next time if it'll fit on the 7.5" wide Vision... otherwise 245's again. I don't know why people think bigger/wider is better.

Many people like the "large Meat" look, but it isn't always practical. The GM wheels are hubcentric, but for a different size hub. I used stainless steel shim stock to fill the gap, but I am planning to machine spacer rings next summer.

I don't think you could beat those vision wheels for a 2500 though!! I do not know of a wheel for SRW applications in 19.5"

I am seriously considering 8R19.5's next time, but have found limited manufacture. I was very apprehensive about the Hankooks, especially since they were much cheaper than anything else, but so far they are great!! I did more quotes and discovered the dealer who supplied my tires gave me an outstanding price!! I paid $153/tire! My BFG Rugged trails in 16" for the old 2500 were that much and load range D.
