18CM. housing

I figured I would post the results of my 18.5 housing on the stock HX-35 for those who care or want to know. I took the stock housing off my 93 Dodge and out it on my 94 Dodge. It is a little mroe laggy but is driveable. It is whicked to hear the turbo spool up. I noticed that EGT's run higher and stay higher until a certin point. It is harder to peg the 1500* guage. Likes to stay around 1200* also boost from the 12CM housing would prg the 40 PSI guage in 3rd gear easy. Now Its kinda hard in 4th and I can do it in 5th. Over all it is a good swap to hang a person over until $$ for a different turbo can be made. Next I will be putting on a 16CM housing just for kicks.

Interesting. I would think that the 18 would be a little to big and be pretty laggy and EGT's would be high.

I tried the same thing, didn't even last a day before I ended up going back to a wastegated 14.
Felt it did the best all round.

well I'm going to hook somewhere this weekend and if it don't do what I want then I might go for the 16CM housing. as I see it the 18 is very driveable and I have no problems with it. yes it takes a little while to spool but again when it does you feel it. Now that I have had a chance to drive it around and get the feel of it, its like normal driveing. I do like the fact that at 90MPH and under WOT I leave a solid cloud of smoke that will last as long as I want it to.

I was just wandering if this is normal. With the bigger housing I noticed my egt's stay around 800* when normal driveing. they use to stay at 600* now don't et me wrong it takes a lot more pedel to move it from 800* to 1300* but it still runs higer during normal driveing.

Yeah, you now have less boost during normal driving so it'll run a little hotter, but you're not restricting it so bad when you wind it up so it doesn't get hot at high RPM. Makes sense to me.

took the horse trailer for a spin today. at 60MPH it ran 900* and I was not pushing on it. hit a good sized hill at 45MPH in 4th and EGT's never got over 1300* and I kept speed all the way up the hill. its not a small GN Horse trailer being a steel 20' trailer and with the washer and dryer and a few other stuff in the back I would guess to weigh 4500 pounds plus the trailer. I was happy with the way it drove. kinda wish I had the 3k and not the 4k kit gsk.

with your 4.10 and an auto I think you would be pretty happy with the 18 housing. most likely you could find one pretty cheap around this or other places. If your still on the stock housing and turbo how are your egts? if they are not too bad then I would try a 16 housing first but that will cost you more $. I'm glad I did the switch because it helped out the top end a lot. I mean my truck pulls past 90MPH with the same force it did at 60MPH with the 12 housing. Plus my boost is down so I don't have to worrie about blowing my Head gasket as much.

The 12 housing is a popular mod for first gen trucks. Sometimes you can trade an 18 straight across for your stock housing.

My egts are perfect right now, its when I add the 370s is when I am going to worry about it. I max out at about 1300 right now, but when I put the 370s in there I know things are going to get toasty.

I bet a 16 housing would do you ok also but for a cheap upgrade that works well the 18 is good also. its all a matter of what money you want to spend on this now and save up for a bigger turbo for later down the road or if you want the same HP you have now for a few years then get a 16. If you lived closer I would just let you barrow my 16.

Dodgeman, thanks for the info, I will get a 16 as soon as the 370s go in.

Thanks again
