180 Stat
Bought a 180 stat from Scheid diesel. Ordered it Friday was on my doorstep Monday. Running hard and empty in 90+ temps, engine water temps stay below 190. The tranny temp would run 165, now runs 150 with a stock pan and the tranny cools off faster. Not bad for $40 upgrade.

I had put one in a couple years ago. And had forgotten how much cooler it kept it. Had it in a friends shop for a valve adjust and he noticed a leak at the thermostat housing and went ahead and fixed and noticed that the seal was bad on the stat. He replaced it for me but went with the 190(probably didnt realize I had 180 in it). I couldnt believe the difference in temp. Previously it was usually well under 190 now it does hover 190 and a bit above at times, fan runs a lot more too. Trans temp definitely went up. I need to pull the radiator and clean real good maybe at that time I will replace the stat again with a 180.

Hohn:
I realize that there is a temperature that is best for a given engine to run at and obviously Cummins or even DC feels that 190 is that appropriate temp but on the other hand Cummins does make the 180 stat as well. I would assume for the 5.9 used in a different application. Do you know what the "optimum"operating temp is for our engines? I dont think I have seen that info. Should be out there somewhere just havent seen it
I know that on gassers once you start modding a lower temp stat is preferred but that is probably due to higher timing and the resultant early detonation issue (pinging). However with some of our timing advance boxes (in my case just an ez) would the same reasoning apply or no?
Not disputing just curious. Still on my neverending quest for knowledge. Heck it took me a long time to get over using 10w-40 oil in gas vehicles after they swithced to using 10w-30 and now even 5w-30.
Not sure how our fan engages. If it is an electrical sensor finding the right wire and a rheostat type resistor might do the trick for you. Then you could dial it in to your preference. Or is it like a mechanical type sort of like the old wire coil auto choke on carbs?

Dually Dave, sent you a pm.
The 190 engine temp is probably the best operating temp, problem is when it's hot as heck and your towing. Hoping the temp will drop back down to the 190 degrees. And with the automatic tranny, 10 degree difference in the heat exchange works for me. Remember, its YOUR truck, do with what you like.
