160pump and 370's....

Well it seems I am on the look out for someone's 181's for cheap if they have a set laying around. Put 370's in my truck the other day with the .020 washers and have to bump the timing still. Will probably do that when I change out the DV's since I have to take the holders off then.

I do have some issues though.... I have a dead miss when free revving and it continues while driving until I start to push some boost/fuel then it clears up and this sucker really lights off!!! I have to pick up a 1/4" NPT tap tomorrow so I can finally install my pyro.

So what I am wondering, is if the miss is from low fuel pressure (possible bad overflow valve) not pushing the pumping plunger all the way down and not cracking an injector off until higher rpms are reached or maybe a scored plunger? I would hope to god that it isn't a head gasket, but it is only one cylinder missing from what I can tell and the exhaust smelled EXTREMELY rich before the injector swap. I had actually hoped it was a sticky injector since it had a low rpm stutter before that cleaned up around 1200rpm. I always run diesel power service additive since the new ULSD and changed my fuel filter 25k ago soon after I bought the truck. I wonder if the prefilter is plugged?

What I am thinking for plan of attack here is this:
1) clean prefilter
2) install pressure regulator on return fuel line and run 40psi fuel pressure
3) install 181 DV's and bump timing to 17*

Should one of those not clear up the miss then I will take a look at my HG and THEN start asking all my tractor pulling buddies who run alcohol burning 8.3's who has a cheap P-pump... Can you say 11mm plungers and an easier to tune governor with no torque plate to worry about?

I'm at 16.5* with PD stage two's which are equivlent to 370's and my truck runs good! I do get a bit of a stumble once and while but I have a set of D valves coming and that should clear things up. As far as whats happening to your truck I would bump the timing and then see what happens I have heard all kinds of problems with the 160 pump and bigger injecters and if you still have the problem then check your fuel delivery.....

Well unfortunately I don't have the DV socket lying around the shop cause someone stole it friggin pulling buddies... So timing at the moment would be by locking the pump at TDC, knocking it loose and turning the engine a few degrees using our degree wheel... But that could be dangerous because I don't know where the timing is set at right now.

I also hear that the 160 pumps are pretty unmanageable sometimes with bigger sticks so I'll keep my eyes out for a 230 AG pump since I know how to tune those a lil better.

It's a 94' man, they have a stutter. I tell you, I was disappointed to find out myself. The 94's and 95's with the 160 pump are known to have a low rpm miss, and injectors only make it worse. I've tried everything everyone has recommended to get rid of it, but the only real solution is a different pump (215)... Good luck.

Yeah mine had the stutter with the stock injectors.... Now that I think about it anyways. It sounded like a sticky injector. I noticed that with more fuel in the tank it doesn't act up nearly as bad. I also had a dead miss as well that clears up after a certain rpm kinda weird. I'm thinking low fuel pressure so I'm gonna put a pressure regulator in the return line to boost the pressure to 40psi since I believe my overflow valve has crapped out on me.

Speaking of crapping out though, my turbo took a dump on me yesterday on the way home. Got anxious and went to pass a car that was going 45 in a 55... Laid in it without watching the boost guage (WG unhooked on a WH1C) and about the time I looked at the boost guage it was spiking to about 41psi and POOF!!! Thought I had just blown a boot cause that is what it sounded like and I could still hear the turbo whistling. Got home popped the hood took off the air cleaner and my turbo was locked solid.

So I'm in the market for an HX35 ATM cause I am too poor to even get a 35/40 hybrid...
