12v Max Power

I have seen quite a few people say that you cant make a 12v much more powerful than it was from the factory, even with expensive mods. Is this true? I dont go down to the local stop n dyno very often and I dont know anyone else who does either so I cant tell how much power my truck has. What is the most power anyone has seen from a 12v and were the mods outrageously expensive? What can I do to my truck for say $1000 as a daily driver that pulls a 17' boat twice a month? Thanks in advance.

the limiting factor with your truck will be the auto tranny. other than that 1k bucks should het you around 350HO I would say if not more. One thing also lowering the HP is the fact that you have the smaller pump also.

Check out TST products for performance upgrades and ATS for tranny upgrades.

What is 700hp not enough from a 12V??? Any truck I have heard of that is pulling sleds use the 12V engine. 450 HP is easy to make without breaking the bank. I have been researching for my own purposes.

Scotty II
Plate
Clutch
Injectors
Exhaust
Turbo
GSK
AFC SK

Boom 450 Hp.

Easy.

Ok, ya got me...

I sorta forget about gauges as I have always had them in all my trucks..

Delivery valves.. Well I guess so if you want the big power you can go that route too.
How extreme do you want to go is the question.

I would think 350/700 would be enough for me. The bug would probably get me though and I would end up getting out of hand with the whole thing.

What you heard is true. A 12V is NOT capable of much more power than stock. I personally don't consider 650hp over stock to be all that much

Go see Piers. A PSP, some huge EDMs, a properly setup head and some decent turbos is all it takes.

Yeah, there's a wimpy 12V pushing a 7200lb 4x4 to 11.20s in the 1/4 miles. That figures to about 900hp. A drag racing calculator setup for rwd will calculate that to 1291 HP.

Yeah, 12Vs suck.

power is pretty cheap up to a point, holding that power gets expensive.

I have a friend that has a plate, 350 injectors, and propane. He figures that he is running 400-450 hp., never had it dynoed yet. The plate is around 300-350, I think he picked up the injectors for 350, and what ever he paid for the propane. He really likes the set up, hasn't really tested it yet though. Plan on getting a little sled pulling started this summer with some friend, just for fun. You can make a lot of hp but you will need to improve tranny first.

there we go yep 12 valves are horrrible motors, a "throw away turd", they are slow and expensive to work on, cummins has no potential, very expensive to upgrade and only mild benefits better get yourself a PSD or DMax and spend $3k to get the kind of power you want, the kind of power we get for a fraction of that cost.

Oops did i let the cat out of the bag on affordability

--------------------------------
better not tell any diehard boeties or Pjoke boys, they might get jellous, the conversation would probably sound like this:
"geez you cummingz boys" dont have to buy glow plugs once a year or spend $3500 on injectors at 130k miles, you're still getting 20 mpg with those kind of hp numbers....... "You're so full of it...... thats impossible..... you cant get that kind of performance and reliability without sacraficing something."

YOU'VE GOT HOW MANY (trouble free) MILES ON YOUR BOMBED MOTOR!!! ..... my PSD has 200k and i burn 4qts oil between oil changes and have only spent $5k to keep it ruinning
-------------------------------

Gee doesnt that sound familiar. Anyways now that i ranted, knock yourself out, money wise you can get a ton of bang for your buck. but there is nothing wrong with the 12v it is an amazing very efficient and trouble free platform capable of far more cheap power than alot of non-belivers... non-users give it credit for, the numbers you are seeking right now are easily obtainable.

I agree, easy to upgrade and more hp gains for your money. The other thing is that we don't have to worry about engine problems, like glow plugs

Its the whole reason I looked for a 97 - 98.5 truck only. I wanted the 12V as I am mechanical minded and like to make small changes myself instead of just plugging in a box. If I can get dirty putting in a fuel plate, I feel I have done something (not knocking the 24 boxes boys).

Not to mention the amount of $ you have to spend to get a measly 300 HP out of a PSD 7.3. My buddy did it, lots of dough and only 300 RWHP, he now owns a shiney new 03 CTD...

I have to balance what I want with what I can afford. I just want enough to blow every bow tie and blue oval around here with those plug in boxes off the road. Too many "kids" around here with comp boxes thinking they are the king...LOL Time for some mechanical education..
