12v guys.....edumicate a 24v guy
Alrighty fellas.....need some 12V help. My buddy Branden's step dad has a 98' Cummins and wants to add some juicy juice to it. I haven't really messed with a 12V before, but I was thinking about crankin up the pump and some other stuff. He doesn't want to go crazy, but just the easy mods I can do like the starwheel, GSK........how easy is the timing?
So just looking for some help on how to do it and where to start turning the wrench!!
Thanks guys

the starwheel is kinda a fine tune, for the takeoff smoke. You wil have to play with to find what setting you and him like. Position the plate about center maybe just a hair forward. Mount the AFC center to just a little forward. Then you will need a boost elbow.
If you get it all togeather and decide it runs cool enough you can give him a little more, just bump the plate and AFC forward a little more.
That should make a tow rig, that runs cool, with ample power.

star wheel will increase or decrease smoke for you... if he wants smoke then turn it in towards the engine. if he doesnt care leave it alone. If not done yt take out the silencer ring in the turbo, its just cool!!! Get him a BHAF or somthing along those lines... very nice purchace, imho. i havent done the timing on my truck yet but im dying to do it!!! If you want even more power than a 10 plate then you could try like a 6 or something. Then number 100 plate (i have one home ground) is very nice but the auto tranny keeps fromt he power goin to the ground. Also pinch the waste gate line or place an adjustable elbow on it.... available at tst, and ebay....lol good luck!!!

Yeah the silencer ring is coming out already.......he started drooling when he road in mine and heard it screaming so he wants his out BAD!! LOL
I'm think he might do a BHAF....he was asking what was cheaper and worked so I mentioned it do him so we'll see.
So how do I slide the plate forward and put in the GSK?? I've never worked on a 12V....only 24Vs so I don't know where to start. Just a rough idea would be great and get me started!!!

Yeah the silencer ring is in the opening on the turbo......take the hose off for the air intake and you'll see it inside the turbo. There is a snap ring that holds it in place so just use a pair of needle nose pliers and a screw driver and work it around and it'll pop out.
And no it doesn't do anything for performance, all it does is make the turbo louder......which is sweet!!
One thing I did notice when I took mine out though.......the turbo won't shudder ( bark ) near as much as it did with the ring in. Which is a very good thing. Turbo bark is hard on the turbo!!

Don't forget the timing.
I think the general consensus is that 16 to 17 degrees is the ideal, even for towing heavy. If you advance the timing, and do nothing else, like me, you'll be surprised at how much better the truck runs. You can have it done, for about $200, or spend from $40 to $300 to buy all the tools to do it yourself. Do a search for timing on the 12-valve forum.
Two things I believe every 12-valve should have, 1) Fix the KDP, 2) advance the timing.

But the third thing is add a GSK to it and really wake up that ride!
