12v engine into an 01

I am thinking about putting a 12v in my 01 because i am sick of worrying about my vp44.

I guess my only real concern is if my stock dash will still work, im not even that concerned with the whole thing working i just want my speedo, tach and fuel gauge to work, im fine with getting after market gauges for the rest.

If you have any info at all please let me know, it will be much appreciated.

Thanks,Matt

It can deffinitly be done. I think signal73 is on this forum, and he put his 95 12 valve into a 01 and I beleive everything works. Only thing is that you might get a check engine light. If your worried about the vp have you thought about p pumping it?? Might be cheaper/easier than the entire engine swap.

I have looked into p-pumping it but its a lot harder than just a pump and front cover swap, i wish it was that simple. As far as cost goes, well there isnt any. I am friends with a guy that will get me whatever I want for free (not stolen either) so im not worried about that part, i just have to be able to do the swap in less than a week.

Thanks for the link, the pics didnt work on my computer but ill look it up again when i get home. ( Im at work, SHHHH )

I would just P pump it. The only real issue is your tach. One fella in our chapter runs a p pump 24v truck. He doesn't even have any check engine light from the swap. There is a cam plate that you can install to get the tach to work. You need to machine your gearbox or get a 12v gearbox. Injector lines and air horn spacer. Fuel shut off valve (you can use you old lift pump wiring to trigger a relay) and increase your fuel pressure supply. Having a stick truck you're already ahead of the game. Of course you can install a 12v, but you just have to swap some of the sensors over. You still have to install a different cam tach plate for the tach but a pretty easy swap. You'll need the old ecm and some of the old wiring harness.

By gear box do you mean the front timing case? I have read on this site that i would have to adjust my timing and change the cam and get custum injectors ( big $$$) and a few other thing that i cant rember. They made it sound like it was more trouble than it was worth, thats why i figured i would just swap motors and be done with it.

Is p-pumping a 24v really that easy?

As far as running the old (12v) ecm im not sure i understand why. I helped a friend put a 12v in an '84 ford and he didnt use an ecm from the doner truck.

Is it just for the gauges? ( my friend spent 1500 on a custom gauge cluster that he built him self)

You don't need to change cams or injectors to p-pump it, stockers work fine. You do need to set the timing, so a timing kit is good to have so you can do it yourself. You can make your own for well less than $100 (I did mine for $60).

The reason for the ECM is for all the gauges, as well as the grid heater control. If you want to do a custom dash, you can pull all the wiring then. Thats my plan for my 12v into my 79 ford.

Stock injectors will be fine, just don't go as big as you'll have way too much smoke. Tate has a pretty strong running P pump 24v. If you daring, you can just bend you're existing injector lines to fit (I've heard people doing that, I just don't recommend it). And yes its just that easy of a swap for a stick truck. A 01 and 02 auto truck need abit more tweaking to get the tranny to work but its still a decent swap. You cruise control might not work, but they sell kits at you're local autoparts store for that or go steal one off a older truck at the bone yard.
