Question 12 valve purchase

I have been recently looking for a manual 12 valve 2nd generation dodge pickup and was wondering what is the best year to get if I wanted to make around 500 horse power. I already know I am going to do a set of gauges, 5’exhausts, FASS fuel pump, and a Scotty air 2. Also I was wondering what performance modifications I could do to harness that type of power like cam plate, injectors, turbo, governor spring and the right type of clutch I were South Bend is good. One other thing I would like to know is any other defects besides the 5th gear retaining nut and the crankcase Dowel Pin problem. thanks

get the 96-98 w/ the 215 pump...

no need for a FASS pump... use that money for something else.

get a #0 or #100 fuel plate, a B1 turbo, some 370 or bigger injectors, and you'll be knockin' on 500hp

South Bend is the only way to fly on the clutch.

5th gear and the dowel pin are the only real potential headaches... the 5th gear nut was done as a preventative measure on my truck at about 160k when the clutch was first done. the truck is about to turn 250k. the dowel pin backed out at 208k

Forrest, I am curious as to why you say no need for a FASS pump, I was under the impression that the 12 valve trucks had the same lift pump issues as the 24 valve trucks, but maybe I am wrong?

Nope, the 12 valves definitely do NOT have the same lift pump issues the 24 valve trucks have. 12 valves have a mechanical pump mounted to the block similar to an old gasser, and they seem to go the distance with very little fuss. The 24 valve uses an electric pump that has a nasty reputation for starving the VP of fuel.

The reason I thought that is because I was talking to a guy with a 97 and he said he lost several lift pumps and an injection pump, so i guess I assumed that they had the same electric lift pump as 24 valves, but I was wrong. The guy was also not very knowledgeable, so who knows.

So is the mechanical lift pump setup the same as on the 1st gen trucks?

Sorry to get off topic, BTT

Forrest i was just wondering what is a good web siee to find that #100 fuel plate and what kind of power does it make. Also i thought those 370 injectors are pritty muck as big as you could go without going with a custom setup butt mabe i am wrong and Thanks for the info on the fuel pump.

The second gen lp flows more than the 1st gens I think. I was told I had to replace the lp to do a p-pump conversion by a diesel shop.

my stock lift pump is still tickin' (literally! LOL!) at ~250k miles

there are a few guys making #100 plates. it's basicly a #0 plate w/ a #10 bottom curve.

the 370's are the best bang for the buck for sure... there's a pretty significant price jump up to the next level... get the 215 pump, and you'll be ahead of the game... the 215 and 370's can push over 500 no problem w/ the right turbo/s

Not trying to post my truck up for sale, but look in the classifieds on this site and I have a manual 12V already done up for ya. Probably making 500 at the flywheel.

Man that Red one is a great looking truck.....a bit too tall for me though.

Thats a pretty reasonable price too.....I just paid way too much for a 98 12V....

I could send you some pics if you get me an e-mail address. I could also see about getting it shipped out your way.
