** First Recommended Mods **
I have a friend that drove my truck and now wants to make mods to his Cummins. He asked what I thought should be the first mods.
What are your recommendations?
I recommended the following:
Step 1
* Gauges: Boost, Pyro, Tranny/Diff
* 4" exhaust
* Increased Air Intake: AFE, Scotty II etc
* Diesel Dynamics 3 Injectors or equivilent
Step 2
* Rancho RS9000 shocks
* Mag-Hytec Diff & Tran
* DD Ultimate Power Module or equivilent
Step 3
* DTT Tranny
* Upgraded Turbo
* Upgraded Lift Pump

You have some good info. there. In hindsight though, I would recommend doing a tranny in step one. I've heard of too many people having problems when waiting on that one. SO, either tranny or clutch should be first in my opinion.

I would add a fuel pressure guage to step 1 for safety's sake, and IMO I would put tranny mods and lift pump before combining injectors and a fueling box. (At least I am. All my trail vehicles are incapacitated at the moment and if something broke I'd be SOL :P )
Evil

Re:** First Recommended Mods **
personally my approach would be to do the beefing up of the drivetrain and monitoring needed first, that way you pretty much eliminate any downtime due to breakdown .........

so guages, tranny , lift pump(big banjo's & holley black)

then injectors & fuel box ....

then if you got egt troubles , scotty, exhuast & turbo(do each one at a time untill the egt's come down)

the shocks and diff/tranny covers can be done at any time

1) Gauges - Pyro, Boost, Fuel Pressure, Tranny Temp

After that, you really want to decide what kind of power you're going to want. If you know you'll be stepping past the 300 mark:

2) Your choice of alternate fuel system.

3) Fueling/timing box kept down on level 1 (to save tranny, avoid heat issues, and have a little bit of fun). If you're one of the few guys who have tranny slip issues at the first power level, then turn the box off.

4) Automatic tranny upgrade

5) Alternate air system.

By this time, you should be able to crank the fueling/timing box up to max and run safe.

6) Injectors and 4" exhaust

You may need to turn down the fueling box at this time, depending on how aggressive you've went with the box/injectors. Step 2's/TST box will leave you on the ragged edge for heat. Step 2's and Comp will be fairly safe. Step 3's with any high end box will leave you wanting:

7) Turbo.

If you're going to stay under the 300 pony mark:

2) Low end fueling/timing box
3) Tranny upgrade
4) RV275 injectors
5) Air system (maybe, probably not going to be needed)

You'll notice in all cases that I've recommended the fueling/timing box before injectors. This is done to improve drivability of the truck immediately. A box will generally move the torque peak down to 1750 RPM (or so) and flatten the curve out to 2700 RPM. Injectors will simply keep the existing curve and add power to it at each step of the way. Aggressive injectors past the 275 level will also require a boost fooler to make use of them. All new boxes have foolers built into them, so buying the box first allows you to skip the added expense of the fooler.

Rod

Push Rod gave you some good info.

The first thing to do is to decide how much HP and money. Find out what it takes to get you there. Make a list and do it in the order described above.

Maddog:
Pushrods hints are very good, but forget about the second part. ( < 300HP )
I think you or your friend will end up on the dark side as anybody else does.
I know there is a 12 step program for bombers... but it simply hasn't got the torque to satisfy ;D

These are good recommendations. Thanks guys!

I didn't recommend the tranny at first due to the cost but I agree it needs to be done pretty close to the start of mods.

I still haven't done my fuel system yet. I chose to go with reduced engine noise first with engine thermal blankets but I should have maybe gone with the new pump.

Just another $600 bucks!!!

Thanks,

MD
