$150.45 Big Honkin AFE Intake Setup
Well, since I bought my truck from the previous owner (96 4x4 2500 5spd), I've been very annoyed with the intake setup he had.
He had a little K&N filter (looked like small one I had on my ol' 85 4cyl 4runner) slid directly on the turbo with no intake tube. And when I say slid on the turbo, I mean it just sat on there with no hose clamps or anything. Not even zip-ties! Total disgrace the the redneck race...
The little k&n limited my boost to around 15psi really gettin on it, and the filter was being sucked into itself like an accordion from my turbo struggling for more air.
So anyhoo, I've been searching around for a week or so trying to figure out the best, and cheapest, thing to do. I decided to buy an AFE Torque Boost Tube from O'Reilly's Auto Parts for $112.45 w/ tax (part number 54-10079). It came in 4 days later.
So now I had to figure out what kind of filter to slap on that beast with a 4.5" inner diameter. I found what I was looking for so far as air filters go, so I headed up to NAPA and ordered the Duralite air filter (part number ca6818) for $38.00 w/ tax. I forgot the dimensions, but they're somewhere around 4.5" flange, 10.5" diameter, and 16" length. It fit perfectly to the AFE Torque Tube
I slapped it all together, and started her up. Holy turbo whistle, Batman! It solved a lot of my crummy performance issues, lets me get the boost up almost to 30psi gettin on it, seems to use a little less diesel (I'll post more on that next time I fill er up since I filled up right before I put it on. Was only getting 16mpg before), accelerates MUCH better, keeps a higher speed at lower rpm and higher boost, and sounds awesome.
I know the Duralite filter I got isn't exactly the "best", but it works just dandy for us budget builders until we can save our pennies for better filter. Not bad for $150.45 out the door. Very good deal in my opinion for people in my position!

No comments on my setup?
Anyone know about how long these air filters last? Already trying to think about what I'll be wanting to get to replace it once it's time...

Yeah. That ca6818 number was supposedly a fram part number that they cross referenced to a duralite. And I KNOW fram aint the best, but for what was in my price range, I really didn't think it could be beat.

I think thats the same Fram filter I have on my truck. I got it thru work, at cost, for like $17, but once I got it, I found that its slightly smaller than an actual BHAF. Next time around I'll order a filter from VulcanPerformance....they seem to be about the cheapest around for an actual BHAF

Try the amsoil dry universal filters EAAU6080 or EAAU4510. I used the 4510 and yes, an improvement over the factory box w/K&N. Also seemed to get better mpg but I have not calculated it yet. Already @ 18/24mpg w/no load and 16-17 towing 5k.
