Are you a redneck?
#137
Well, I have seen on here that some of ya'll say that because your from up north you can't be a redneck? I'm originally from a little po-dunk town outside of Buffalo, NY. Somewhere between Rochester and Buffalo. No it was not all city! I had corn fields, dairy farms, chicken farms all around my house. We swam in the creek in the summer just below our house, actually spent most of our days during summer break down at the creek, fishing, swimming and one time hunting anything that moved with my new compound bow!
When I got older we would frequent the local salvage yard on the weekends to get used car parts. On saturdays and sundays they were supposed to open at 8 or 9 am, but that depended on how hard the owners(a family thing) were drinkin the night before. I've fixed more cars, motors and stuff under a shade tree than one man should have to. I've hunted, fished, spit,drank....still spit. Sittin around leaning over the bedrails of the truck shootin the bull with friends is still a favorite pastime. A good time out for me is heading up to one of the local goat/cattle sales on Friday night or Saturdays. I may not even buy anything, just fun to sit there and watch. I told some good friends of ours one time when they asked what I do for fun. I said, " I like to go to the goat/sheep sale on Friday nights".
I now live in southern middle TN, a short drive to Alabama. I've been here for 13 years and sometimes some of the locals and I get to talkin and they find out I'm from around Buffalo they are surprised cause they thought I was from Tennessee, might be the bib overalls I wear all the time!! Some of the best friends I've had that grew up around middle Tn have told me that I have been grandfathered in to the southern boy network because I've been here so long and because some of the stuff I do is more redneck than anything they have ever seen! I still say yes sir, yes maam, heck I have a real good friend and go over and talk with him at his shop, ride around in the combine while he's cutting beans and I still call him Mr. But, then again, I'm not a big fan of Nascar or drinkin. I do love being around my animals, wide open spaces and actually being able to see the night sky in the summer. Maybe I cannot be considered a redneck due to my birthplace, maybe I'm just a country boy, always have been and always will be. My kids on the other hand, they're turning out to be some real rednecks!!

Just curious, Batavia, Medina, which town? I grew up in Kirkwood. Hey, you were "uptown" up there by the Thruway and the canal. Yeah we were big city also, school was "Acre Place" two rooms six grades. I had it better though, had the Susquehanna river to roam on. Wash day was Thursday, the weekly bath, wash done, hot water... once a week. Ate a lot of sunfish and bullheads and what deer we could bag. For you southerners, bullheads are catfish...

My first school was a 2 room school for all 8 grades. about 5 kids per grade. My 8th grade year we consolidated with 2 other schools. I then went to school in town. 8 rooms/ 8 grades. This was in the late 60's early 70's. I still think I'm probably more of a hick or country boy. I have no problem being called a redneck. I just don't want to claim a title that I might not have a right to. This is the same reason that I never wear a cowboy hat. I like them but I always feel like an imposter when I wear one. I figure a real cowboy would probably shake his head in disgust.

I grew up in a little town called Indian Falls, about 5 minutes from the reservation and 20 minutes or so west of Batavia.
I have two cowboy hats and where them, well one a lot, the other was $200 so it is saved for special occasions. I don't feel like an imposter, I like the hats, especially when your working out in the sun, rain, snow.....well you get the picture.
Does opening the truck of your 77' T-bird or Moms 66' Skylark make you fall in that category? That's all I ever had on my bird and I don't think Mom ever used a key to open the truck!

Well now I just might be. During a hard winter many years ago, my wife went to visit her relatives. We had a new home and the garage wasn't finished yet and I wasn't about to try and rebuild the engine in my old Mercury at 20 below zero. Had the glass people come in and remove the big front window, then put up a set of ramps and drove it into the livingroom, double tarped up the window hole, had scads of cardbord on the floor. Thought I would have it all done before she returned, but didn't. Too much beer and not enough cardboard and oil seeped through and wrecked the carpet. When she came home she was a (tad) upset, went back to the relatives and said for good.
Anyway a couple weeks later I got the car and beer bottles cleaned out, new carpets installed, window back in and with the promise I would be a good fellow and not do it again, she came back.
