Hey guys just bought a new house. It has a wood burning stove(never had one before) in the basement thats tied into the central heat. I just fired it up, its burnin, but I dont feel any heat coming out of the registers, its been about an hour. I know I have to be doing something wrong ...help.

Most need to build up a lot of heat before blower will kick in but without seeing your personal set up I would only be guessing . You will not feel much heat until the blower starts if you have one , you may need to set thermostat to a blower only setting but like I said with out knowing your set up I am just guessing .

I dont want to sound like an idiot(but here goes ), but when you say set the thermostat to blower, are you meaning to fan?

check to make sure all your air damper are working.
make sure your fire didn't go out.

Mine says blower only yours maybe fan only that should get the heat moving try and see what happens . Most come on automatic when fire box hits a certain temperature , I do not know how yours is set up .

I turned the fan on and its blowin, just not hot. Nowhere on my thermostat does it say blower.

My stove which stands about 5' tall is plumbed into the chimney, then on the opposite side of the chimney is more pipe that runs into the furnace. Everything is located in the basement. Then Ducting is distributed from there throughout the house. I dont know if that helps as far as my set up? This shouldnt be rocket science, I dont know why it just wont work

Ok , fan , blower same thing , does not appear to be your problem , must be something shut off at stove . Are the pipes that go to furnace hot that come from the wood burner ? Is all your heat going up the chimney ? Is there some kind of draft control ? If your fan is running and you have no heat it is just not making it to the plenum for some reason . How many BTU's is the wood burner and how big is the fire box ? The heat has to be going some were and my guess would be up the chimney and the only way to stop that is to some how decrease the draw .

I am not a heating specialist, but I did spend the night in a Holiday Inn last night (actually, I had one of these.).
First check to see that the regular furnace, not the wood stove, actally works on it's own. It should cycle, flame on (or electic heat grid on) when asked to.
the thermostat should have a setting for "Auto" or "Fan" and maybe "heat" and "cool" (a sepearate switch).
Set the switch on "Fan" and raise the thermostat to above whatever is currently ambient room temp. the mercury switch inside should audibly "click" (very soft sound) when you crossover the threshold.
the fan shold come on, and start moving warmed air from the ducting.
Next check the stove, and see if there is a fan system on IT. there may be a seperate method of moving air from the stove.
If not, check all flues and ducts for blockages. It is possible someone stuffed some newpaper up the ducts to stop a draft.
This all should have been done before firing up the stove, since you could potentially pump a lot of Carbon monoxide into your house.
You can shut down the stove, by closing the damper (if there is one, and shutting all incoming air off by closing the intakes, and shutting the door tight. Let everything cool, and check the entire system over for function.
If this does not solve the problem, call a furnace guy, tell them about the wood stove, and make sure they have worked with these before.
Buy a CO monitor, and put it next to the smoke alarm.

This sounds a bit like my backup heat plan. He mentions a pipe to chimney from stove and another pipe to furnace from chimney. probably both flues. My guess is it is a GRAVITY system on the wood stove probably no actual ductwork to the wood burner. In my case when the woodburner is going we leave the basement door open a bit to allow some of the heat to rise. The most of the heat just warms the ceiling of the basement and in turn warms the floor of the house (no insulation here).

My thoughts as another woodburner:

1) Check the chimney damper---if it's wide open, all your heat will go right out the chimney...once the fire is going good and hot, close it down and it'll put the heat into the house

2) Check that there's no dampers or baffles on the ductwork off the woodstove---they may not be automatic. There needs to be some way to switch between the furnace and the woodstove, so when the furnace is running, its not pumping heat into the woodstove.

First, let me say thanks to everyone for the responses. After getting quite frustrated with this thing, I ended up getting a hold of a heating company that installs this brand of stove and furnace. After walking through my set up with the guy, he has come to the same conclusion as ELECTRIFRIED ^

I have him coming out next week to see if something can be retrofitted so the heat actually can go through the ducting. Having this thing warm the basement is all good and dandy, but I have two story's on top of the basement. Kids sleep up top.

Allright, time to suck it up The reason this whole thing happened, is because I didnt pay attention to my oil tank, and the dern thing ran out of oil middle of Fri. night....hence no heat . I know, I know... pretty dumb. I accept some flaming for this rookie behaiver on my part.

Most fuel companies have a "Keep Full' plan where they stop buy monthly and top you off....call you company and see if they do this....beats the heck out of running out.
