Window's Vista

Anyone running the beta program. My kid is and I like the way it look's. He said it won't work with some of the software. But this was an early beta. I'm sure they'll get it better as it goes.

Anyone thinking about trying it. I'm going to.

I have just built myself a new computer and moved my 3.8 Ghz down 1 position,
I have the Windows XP Professional that has the free Vista upgrade but I do not think I am going to use it; I have a problem with windows checking all of my installed software for licenses and authenticity.

And restricting me to the times I can transfer it to my next computer since I usually build a new computer every 6 months or so.

It is none of their business what I do.

There is way too much Big Brother in the new OS and they are trying to sell it as security to protect us.

You should read upon it from other than Microsoft sites and hear what they have to say.

I am not a dishonest person but what I do is nobodies business.

I've got Vista Ultimate edition running on 3 PCs at home. Agreed...it is a total resource hog. If you're going to run it straight out of the box I would say have a bare minimum of 2GB RAM...and have a good video card (256MB+) if you intend on running the new interface...IMO. If you take the time to go through all the processes that are running and disable the unnecessary stuff you can trim it down a good bit...but it will still be a hog and run slowly on older hardware.

I have been testing with 32bit and 64bit versions of Vista and hate it. Even with the next gen hardware coming down the pipeline it's still a pig.

We were running it as a pilot at work. However, we've had to revert back due to many apps were not playing friendly with Vista.
All the normal "Windows" apps worked fine ( like Excell, IE, Word, etc). However, the apps like Reflections (Telnet app) and many of our security protocol software did not like Vista.

Wow. I didn't think it was that bad. Maybe I need to re-think it. Thank's for the input.

Not trying to start a flame war here, but I use a Mac. I used a Mac at the fire dept. way back when. I then bought my first computer in '95, it was a Gateway 2000 with Windows 95. I hated it, but wound up buying another computer in '98 with... you guessed it... Windows 98. I had heard that Mac was coming out with a new OS in '01, and decided that it was time to buy another computer. I bought a Mac, and will never look back.

Ok, let the flame wars begin...

I like Macs. If they were a little more universal I'd get one. They're pretty close to normal pc's in that respect though. A Mac will outperform them in most areas. As to Window Vista, maybe in 3 or 4 years when they have the bugs worked out and when they figure out how to disable most of the junk I don't need, like all of that security stuff. I don't trust new software. That's why I'm staying with Office 2003 for awhile also.

Post your system spec's if yall going to go off calling it a resource hog. If you don't have suffecient resources, of course its a hog.

You dont give a starving man a single piece of bread and call him a hog when he "eats it all up" do you?

There are compatibility problems, like there always will be. Deal with em, buy new hardware and software, and move on.

Thanks t-boe, I figured that I'd be slammed for bringing up Macs, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I'm planning on buying a new Macbook Pro this year, in part because my old Powerbook is going on 6 years, and I have to use ACT! for what I do for work. I have Windows XP running on one of my old computers for that, and when I finally get the Macbook Pro, I'll be able to run Windows as well as Mac OS-X on the same machine. I'm not sure if I'll get Vista for it though.

As far as Microsoft working the bugs out of Vista, don't hold your breath. They introduce more bugs into each new version of Windows without getting rid of the old ones. However, I do have to say that XP is far more stable than any of the previous versions I've used, so it'll be interesting to see how Vista stands.
