Why does it cost so much to install new gears on an F150?

when i was putting a new carrier in my truck i was quoted $750 to just put the new bearings on and shim the carrier properly.
no new gears, didnt have to even touch the pinion...and i bought all the parts already. these shops are insane, i reinstalled the carrier myself and been driving it that way with no noise, no problems, just used the old shim thickness and the backlash was within spec.

I agree on the 300 per axle price stated above. That is plenty of profit if the customer is supplying parts.
The thing that makes these trucks a pain to do is the IFS requires taking the suspension apart... But since the truck is getting a 6 inch lift it could be done all at the same time so in reality there isn't that extra labor to charge for.
Truck has 40K easy miles on it so I don't think he'd have to rebuild anything.. It's pretty much a daily driven mall cruiser and take to the deer lease truck.
He's going with 35.5 inch tires and 20 inch wheels and I straight up told him he's going to regret not gearing it with that 5.4 3 valve. Plus when his transmission goes out in a couple years .

You dont know anyone around there with some mechanical abilities? That way, a case or 2 of beer, and parts is all it will cost you. I'm sure you can find someone who knows how to do it, or someone who knows someone that can help you out for cheap.

Heck, I'd slap them in there myself but this guy is kinda worried about warranty etc on the work. Honestly I would be too on my truck for example but his is 3 years old so...
I might try to find a shop for him since he helped put my lift on my dodge. I want to see his done right.

$400 for gear sets
$200 master install kits
$600 labor
so around $1200 or so, but I have not priced gears sets of these axles, so that is a rough guess...

I had gears and a Detroit Locker put in my Toyota 4Runner for $1450 parts and labor at a shop that specialized in axles and tranfer cases and such. I have had the rear done on two F-150s, both cost $550 parts and labor. $1900 is highway robbery.
