Well anyone who can put a .17 cal up a wolfs nostril and not leave a trace and not kill him is full of it.......It would be one out of a million. I don't care what distance he shoots. He would need to be point blank.

Any wound on a wolf of that nature and the wolf is considered useless to the rest of the pack and they deal with it fast. They are only as fast as the slowest one. This has been documented many times around Yellowstone. It's hard justice but it works for them.

I agree with the snout shot. Very hard to deal with. The rest of the pack would act violently toward that one for sure.

Years ago, I remember a bunch of wolves being moved from Alberta to Yellowstone

Yep, our wolves are Grey Wolves from Canada and farther North. They are big. The grizzly population here is booming too because of all the kills the wolves leave. The grizzlies have more feed than they usually do.

The wolf thing is a mess, especially in WY b/c we didn't get the go ahead to delist for the short period like MT and ID did. I can't personally verify but I know some guys that hunt hard in southern WY and they've say they've seen wolves back in the hills. Towards home (Pinedale/Sublette County WY) wolves have been there a long time and you can darn sure bet I don't go anywhere on the forest w/o packing. And b/c WY has the elk feedgrounds the wolves concentrate on these areas in the winter. They killed a couple of the neighbors dogs last year. It's a mess but on a lighter note, a judge finally ruled that the USFWS was "arbitrary and capricious" when they made their decision not to delist. Will be appealed of course, but might be some light at the end of the tunnel.
